Nintendo announces New 2DS XL

Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo announces New 2DS XL

Is the stylus still on the bottom like the New 3DS XL? I can't tell with all the quick flipping they do with it in the promo video.

I just want to know the dumbass that thought that was a good idea. My stylus now flops out or barely hangs on by a thread when in use.

I dont think we should compare N2DSXL with the game boy Micro. Micro was more like an experiment just to see how the market would react in this model. Secondly, it was not promoted the same way like the N2DSXL. To e honest, I dont really remember them putting too much effort, trying to push sales. It was more like we "suspend Game boy family and this is a farewell". N2DSXL is promoted the same way with the previous 3DS models. Also, as you can see the design is better than the design of micro by far. The aim here is clearly to push sales and to show that 3ds is still around. What do you think?

Edit. Forgot to mention that I bought a pink 3ds model, gave it to my sisters, then bought blue N3DSXL and I'm really interested in buying the new one, just to have it in my library, or playing with it occasionally. As you can see, I'm really surprised and excited about the new 2DS .

Then shall we compare it to the Wii Mini?  Or perhaps the backlit Gameboy Advance SP?  Or maybe the PSone?  Or the Xbox 360 E?

Companies have released final revisions of consoles just before or just after their successors many times before.  It's pretty SOP.

Wii mini was like micro. It came just to fill a very little amount of demand. To be honest,I don't think that it has sold more than a milion. I still don't understand this move, because that time N decided to kill the Wii, there were no important releases. However, we could easily compare it with the other machines you mentioned, cause they had the same characteristic. To wide the install base, as it happened. So, 2DS XL is more likely in the same position as SP, One and E. Besides that, 3DS is still getting games and there is still a market ready to buy one. I also think that this model should have beed released years ago.

Exactly.  I classify these as "mop up" systems.  They come in to clean up the last of the sales a platform can get by offering more affordable options that usually have more desirable form factors, allowing the company to capitalize primarily on the backlog.  The New 2DS XL fits that bill perfectly.

The GameBoy Micro is not the best form factor.  Actually the original GBA was the best form factor (never played on SP but it looks like a hand cramp).  Try playing Street Fighter Alpha 2, F-Zero, or Mario Kart on a GameBoy Micro.  It becomes a hand cramp very quickly especially if you have decent size hands.   I have 20th Anniversary Famicom Edition GameBoy Micro and I'm proud of it but it's only good for games like Advance Wars. I see you put usually there but I still had to bitch about controls.  The original 3DS was crampy also with MK after a decent session along with dare I say the phat DS (fuck snakers in MK DS).

With this Nintendo should be able to comfortably get the 3DS past the 70m mark within this fiscal year. Good announcement, because the only 2DS version that has been available before isn't exactly pretty and does not have a clamshell design.

Skimming a bit through this thread suggests that there are people who believe that this announcement could cut into Switch sales. That's not how it works though. This is going to add to the total of the 3DS family without taking anything away from Switch, so it can only be viewed as a positive thing.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

It's not universal no.  But on the other hand, late gen revisions are for diversifying usually, appealing to those who haven't bought in.  For some, the super small Micro was attractive due to the discretion of it.

Ya the person who is getting their first 3DS family device in 2017 very likely does not belong in the same demographic as someone looking to get a Switch in 2017.

They can easily coexist 1-1.5 years without one hurting the other.

If they produce enough units... Wherefore, lately... ;) Although, this is justifiable because of constantly missing the forecasts of  wii u in its first two years ( which were somewhat high ), so they're conservative now.

3DS is scarce in Europe and the USA since Jan ( thanks to pokemon... ;) ), if these people who were going to buy one but couldn't find any and still want to become a 3DS  owners better Nintendo produce a sufficient amount of New 2DS xl units...

As for the switch part, I agree...New 2ds xl is for people who can't afford anywise a switch or those who're waiting for a more portable handheld part of switch and of course considerably cheaper ( as switch is kind of expensive for the handheld console only gamer ) ! Those who can comfortably spend 299$, will go for the premium switch hardware and software and if they want they can buy a new 2ds xl later for the vast library of 3DS...

Also New 2ds xl is perfect for those who want the fairly better hardware ( I mean owners of old models ) of New 3ds xl ( the unusable browser on 3DS is usuable on New 3dxl, it even supports html5, it plays youtube videos smoothly ) but not at 200$...

What will be harmed for New 2ds xl is New 3ds xl... New 2ds xl has the same hardware with it, it's lighter by 60g, sleek and elegant! Also, it fixes a long time problem since DS family, the  durability of hinges and the best thing, it costs just 150$ ( all that time people were paying 50$ for something they didn't desire/use/had problems with it. It's basically the best 3DS ever!

3DS and Switch can peacefully coexist!

Exactly! ( While New 2ds xl is and I descibed why in the above quote by me to rolstoppable )

One image, thousand words!

That super tiny screen...

I must say, this is the nicest looking "3"DS to date. I kind of want one for myself.
