Only person trying to dismiss things is yourself tbh as the article also highlights the impact of mobile, not my problem if them doing well is hard for you to swallow.

I'm not dismissing anything. Just pointing out the facts. Impact of mobile - it seems that Nintendo only got $3.5M from Pokemon Go in Q4 2016.

Daniel Ahmad said they "recognized approximately ~$180 million in profit from Pokemon Go alone."

No it's been cited they got 180m from Pokemon go, when added to the 280m they made from sales of products in a quiet year for them that's 460m which is 50% of 920m.

And of course, they immediately distribute it all to investors as dividends instead of investing...

Bet with PeH:

I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.

Bet with WagnerPaiva:

I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

Is this a lot?

For a game company, it's amazing. Sony is projected to do 1billion in profit by comparison, and.the do much more than gaming which is interesting.

Selling underpowered, overpriced hardware certainly pays off. I wouldn't be surprised if despite its low sales the wii u has made more money for Nintendo than the xbox one ever will for Microsoft if you exclude xbox live revenue that is.

It wouldn't surprised me if WiiU made more money than Ps3 either.

That wouldn't surprise me either, very over-complicated console both to develop and manufacture. Absolutely amazing with the right software though with the console working at full power with games developed from the ground up for the hardware.

You know that $661m of that net profit comes from selling the Seattle Mariners? xD

Operating Profit is a lot more fun to look at, because like it says in the OP that's the "core business of making and selling products." and is a better indication of how their business is doing, and how well there games and consoles are doing is what we care about.

$264m operating profit, will be up a lot more next year.

Xbox One isnt that expensive to make. Very similar to the PS4. Plus considering its been outpacing the 360 since launch, i wont be suprised if MS will announce a profit on it soon. Probably when they hit close to 30m to 40m. Those Live Subscribers though would be killing it for Xbox.

If anything im more curious on the Scorpio. Since MS are mainly customising it themselves i wonder how much they will lose on it.

Just for comparisons sake, the PS3's RnD was almost twice that of the XB1 from memory.

One thats not true, second it's not that simple. Look at the break down and you might learn something.

One, never assume anything, it makes an ass out of you and me. Two, Nintendo hasn't made this level of profit in years, so yes it's amazing for a game company focusing on dedicated gaming hardware and software. Three, I'm aware of the breakdown and I understand the impact of the selling of the stake in the Mariners, however, this is still a great start and is comparable to Nintendo's pre Wii days which were still very profitable times for Nintendo. We'll have to see where it goes from here, but profit is profit, is profit.

Nintendo is very clever. FY2017 was pretty dismal as far as releases go. The Wii U was sputtering and they basically stopped releasing games for it a few months in.

But they limped big time and should be applauded for that. Selling their share in the Mariners + the NES Classic + Pokemon + 1 month of Switch and they put together a halfway decent year financially.

FWIW their earnings guidance for FY2018 is 45b yen, or about 400m USD.
