These Zelda sales are very exciting. For comparison, Twilight Princess on the Wii sold 0.60 million and Skyward Sword sold 0.38 million.  WIth time, Breath of the WIid will become one of the best selling Zelda games in Japan. The big question is... will it hit 1 million?

it has potential to be the first Zelda to cross 1 million since OoT nearly 20 years ago.

Yes, this zelda it's the kinda of game that has legs, it will still see a bump when the story dlc release and we can still see a bundle down the road, i think it will reach 1 million on switch version alone.

but it is true, Zelda isn't as big as Mario in Japan. That 500k in switch is already big for Japan on its early weeks. I don't think Switch sales would increase if the stock wouldn't even increase though.

Splatoon 2 for sure would be big in Japan.

Well, thats an unfair comparison then. There is always that franchise that is more popular.Yokai Watch is more popular than Mario, then Pokemon is more popular than Yokai Watch, and so on.It still dosent change the fact that Zelda is a popular franchise on its own right(and may even set a new sales standard for the franchise)

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

but Zelda isn't really that popular in Japan.  the historical numbers are there from previous Zelda games.  as I have mentioned 500k of BOTW in Japan is already huge numbers.  as you have mentioned Zelda is popular franchise in his own right so it ain't that big franchise that would move consoles like what you have mentioned - Pokemon, Yokai, Monster Hunter, Mario, etc.. :)

500k is not huge. Just average. Phantom Hourglass sold 900k just in Japan, and Spirit Tracks 750k.

Botw still has potential to grow and it might reach these sales, but for the moment its numbers are just ok for Japan.

Nier has turned into a massive success with excellent legs. Ps4 hardware around ~20k. Hopefully it won't go lower.

If anyone is interested, I've compiled the 2017 data from Media Create in a spreadsheet.

Right now it has weekly data, cumulative data, and a few other comparisons I'm working on. I'll keep updating it throughout the year.

Oh wow! This is awesome! Nice work!

The Switch should be able to beat the 3DS and PS4 this year.

I still think you are comparing apples with oranges.Zelda may not be MH or Pokemon big there, but it still sells great and arguably moved Switch consoles. And if it keeps up at this pace, it will outsell OOT and Twilight Princess, which each sold around 1.3 millions in Japan(its around that number.Cant really check now since Im on the phone).I personally would consider that number big enough to say that the franchise is popular over there.

as I've been in discussion with Nautilus, 500k in just a few weeks is already huge. not stating 500k is huge comparing to other titles that is already in LT numbers. ;)
