Snake pass Switch Review

Originality: Three developers walk into a bar. They decide to make a game with the maneuverability of Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, use the art style and music of Banjo Kazooie, and decide to make the game freaking hard and death filled like Dark Souls. Out pops Snakepass. What a unique game that no one was asking for! The combinations of different concepts is strong in this game, though it does feel a lot like old school RARE 64 days.

18/20

Graphics: Mostly pretty visuals, though some noticeable issues from time to time.

8/10

Art Style: Beautiful art style! I REALLY liked how the colors poped in this game. My only complaint here is that most of the game looks incredibly similar in terms of style. Couldn’t they have done snowy levels or something other than bright tropical colors? Oh well.

12/15

Story: *Ahem…* Well, at least there was some kind of wrap up at the end, and throughout the game a “menacing enemy” was occasionally teased, until the very end when you figure it all out. In general, a pretty weak story, but at least they tried somewhat!

25/30

Game Interface: Annoying or not? The games camera can be a pain sometimes, with it zooming you out or in frequently when you are attempting a difficult crawl, which got me killed quite a bit. Other than that, it was decluttered in general.

3/5

Controls easy and fluid or difficult and rigid? Ok so I was annoyed by the fact that the stupid bird wouldn’t always pick me up when I hit y the first time, which often got me killed. It took me a bit to get used to climbing in this game.

3/5

Is it fun? It is a rather short game mixed with non-repetitive level designs that have new challenges pretty frequently. I enjoyed my time on this game, but if it had been much longer I would have grown tired of it, so I’m glad it wasn’t too long! Still, dying this much in a game can take its toll on the enjoyment.

Whoa, no interest in this game? Or maybe it was posted too late, alrighty lol.

That review system is pretty broken, 30 points for story... this game requires no story to begin with.

The Review System by itself is not broken - it's just not the right one for a platformer; or any game which barely needs a story to begin with. Giving weight to different categories is fine, but it should be adapted for each genre. For instance, tight controls are way more important in a platformer than in a RPG

It kind of sucks that the story is the biggest part of the game, and it did it very poorly.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Yeah...I don't know if giving story so much weight make sense for this game.

For what it's worth I really enjoyed Snakepass. It was fun and challenging and the soundtrack was great. Plus, I got to play it at 1080/60.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

As I have said before (though not in a while, I guess since people have gotten used to my review style) I review things differently than most reviewers. I don't agree with adjusting to match a certain style of game. People always tell me not to destroy Tropical Freeze or NSMBU because of their lack of story, then I play games like Trine and Trine 2 with really fun story telling. Every game CAN have a good story, if only the developers aren't lazy, Snakepass is no exception.

I feel like Story impacts to much on the final score... a game doesn't require a good story or one at all for that matter to be great game. It just needs great gameplay. Like what if you reviewed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? That game literally has no story yet it's currently got a 94 score on metacritic.

I'm sorry but your system is just really bad, maybe the worst I have seen. Also you completely fail to understand that story has never really been essential in videogames, you can have a masterpiece with no story yet you reserve a 30% of the score for that independently of the genre which results in a complete mess.

Wow, haven't had someone try to argue with me in a while (maybe 2 plus years?). I'm not gonna argue. This isn't a review for everyone, but for those of us that WANT a good story in EVERY game, which I understand is the minority. If you don't like my system, then don't comment.
