Would be a nifty feature, but not as nifty as some think. I've used 4G for online play and it's not particularly good. It's only serviceable at the best of times. And the speeds and ping can fluctuate a lot without warning. It would mostly be used for eshop use, not gaming. And of course, it would require extra fees and that's no fun. So yeah, would not pay a dime more upfront.

And no, calling and texting would mean nothing to me. In fact, bloating the system with such superfluous features would be a negative in my mind. I have a phone.

I really do not understand the bolded. Having an OS based Phone and Text app would require almost no resources. The Vita could make and recieve calls while playing games, and it was not even a system level feature.

I get that many claim they would never use it, but why should it be stricken from exsistance, and kept away from those that don't want an Android or iOS device.

There should be absolutely no reason why Nintendo can not release a 4G model as a option, and no reason that the 4G model only would have a Phone and Text app. And, if someone wants the 4G version, and wants to pay for data, but absolutely refuses to use it for calling and texting, then the app should be able to be removed from the home screen, out of sight and out of mind.

There is just this really wired thing with gamers, and console/handheld hardware. It is like any new feature is looked at as evil. In any other industry additional optional features are looked at as an advancement, and recieves some form of excitement as they broaden the potential user base, and add more value for current supporters. In gaming, a new feature is addded, and it is like, Nooooooooooo, WTF, why, OMG, now we have to deal with this bull shit, $%^& gaming, if this is how it is gonna, be I am done.

It's like the mentality is, if games are not your 100% purpose for buying this device, then we don't want you here. I will never understand why gamers want the least functional devices on the market, and want to drive everyone away from their devices. The more open we are to new features, form factors, and business models, the more consoles and handhelds can be sold. The more devices sold, the more money their is in the ndustry. More money equals, more, bigger, and better games. It is a win for everyone involved.

I don't find what you propose evil. I find it a colosal waste of time and resources.  Rather than developing a call and text app and spending money and time negotiating with Verizon or T-Mobile or whatever, I would rather they keep their efforts laser focused on a game-centric experience.  The proposed functions are readily available in countless devices you can get for zero dollars up front, they are completely superfluous and would not influence sales a bit.  More is not always a plus, sometimes it's just fluff.  Nintendo has publishers and developers to negotiate with, an e-shop to improve, numerous quality of life improvements to make to the OS.  These are far more important to their success than 4G functions and a call and text app.  Doesn't help btw that the Switch doesn't support Bluetooth headsets and therefore you would have to use a wired headset to even make calls.

Nope cause the added functionality would be useless to me. Mobile Data comes at a premium in Canada charging $40-$60 for 1gb. So... Nope. And that is not even getting into the latency and reception issues.

I am paying 120 Franks hier in Switzerland and have Swisscom Infinity XL. 4g+ and Real flatrate. Had just last month 202 GB on usage.

That switch 4g would be great for me. Just 20 franks more and i can duplicate my sim card. I could use both with the same contract.

In addition to that, apps and features such as that require reserved resources such as CPU and Ram for the device. More features you add in, the less avaliable resources the devs have to build games. Now for most people, normal calling and texting is generally not enough, they want skype, whatsapp, facebook, hangouts, snapchat and etc apps which all need to run in the background. And of course, if you have social media, you need a camera function cause most people want to take pictures of everything. Phones can do that easily because phone's aren't dedicated gaming devices so there is no resource allocation required apart from the system OS but with dedicated gaming devices, there has to be resource allocation in order for the developers to know how much they can use so they can make the most out of it.

Having basic calling and texting would only satisfy a minority of people while the rest who want all these social media as well as many other kinds of apps will always get a phone. It certainly isn't worth it for Nintendo to get all the licensing rights and what not just so a few people can have functionlity that majorty use other devices for anyway. Most people don't know this but the game of LTE functionailty isn't as simple as asking Nvidia to put in an LTE chip inside and making it work. There are many kinds of LTE such as GSM and CDMA. The patents for CDMA is held by Qualcomm in the states and that is a far different chip than anything that Nvidia has. So in order for them to work, it will have added costs and there are many other issues too such as battery life.

*Opens eyes slowly*

The answer is no, it drains battery faster and expensive fee service depends on countries as well as device would cost more expensive.

As technology advances these things become easier and cheaper. Handhelds have to evolve or they will become obsolete, and we will loose the option to even have mobile gaming form factor devices. If the Handheld market does not evolve the only option for mobile games will be Smartphones, which as mentioned are not built with games in mind. Right now, it may not look like their is a market for a well made gaming phone, but no one has ever tried to make it happen. If Switch had a 4G option, and could make calls and text, it would turn the mobile industry upside down. The inital costs and negotionations, would be well worth it in the long run.

It is vital to the future of gaming that both Handhelds and Consoles, continue to grow, and keep up with the rest of the industry. If these devices do not keep up, we will all be stuck gaming on Apple TV, Amazon Fire, PC, Smartphones, and Tablets. That is a future I do not want to see. I want the hardware and OSs in the hands of companies that put gaming first.

Not necessarily because phones wont offer the same experiences as a dedicated handheld does... Building games for a phone is different than building a game for a dedicated device and it has nothing to do with power. The business model is different. Handhelds are evolving but competing with mobile is just silly at best because again, mobile isn't just about calling and texting anymore. Having 4g functionality with calling and texting wouldn't make a scratch in the mobile industry because most people use apps like Discord, Snapchat, whatsapp and etc instead. To compete, Nintendo would not only need apps as vast as Android/iOS but they would need cameras and etc as well. And the problem with that is again, less cpu, ram and etc resources going towards gaming...

What works for you doesn't work for everyone, hence why basic features such as calling, texting and 4g won't keep it relavant because calling and texting alone havn't been relavant for some time now. Apps is whats fuels the mobile industry and without apps, no mobile users will even bother looking at a handheld as a replacement for their phone. And not to mention that Apple, Google and Samsung are quite a few times bigger than Nintendo is.

Just have it tied to my phone in my coat pocket while outside, takes 2 minutes to setup really so no I wouldn't pay for another model to do this, would have to get another sim and data plan rather than just using my phones data.

Even if the Switch had 4g, it couldn't replace my phone. Camera, gps, apps on apps on apps, music, video, books, etc--there Switch couldn't compete. But then, I don't want it to. It's good at playing console quality games on the go (and at home). For me, that's enough.

Even if the Switch had all of this it still could not replace my phone. It's too big.

The Switch already has too many features in my opinion. So one more would not make it better.
