Super Metroid is probably my favorite game on SNES. Do it 2D in a similar vain as that without any voice-work/dialog/hand-holding and I would be all over it.

The little bit of writing at the start and end of super metroid was great.
It meant that the entire game you were making your own story.
Music and visuals thus played a greater role on setting the mood and urgency.

3D Metroid has far more untapped potential. I wouldn't mind a 2D throwback, but imo its either a 3D game and a 2D game or just a 3D game. It would be a huge waste of potential to have a 2D game instead of a 3D one.
