We don't have factories or conditions like that. We don't have that many factories left anyway of a huge scale, yes big car plants, aerospace but certainly not consumer electronics. Huge level of protection for workers in the UK many would argue too much.
We certainly don't have factories with suicide nets.
The sad thing is a lot of production of consumer products has moved out of China because they are too expensive. Bicycles are now being made in Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Bangladesh because its cheaper than China and no doubt some other country will be cheaper than those in a few years and production will move to that country. It's always a race to the bottom. Iphones could be made in the USA perhaps with an increase in cost price as little as 10% as Apple's margins are huge and they could be reduced only slightly to manufacture in the USA. Alternatively a combination of Mexican and US manufacturing could probably offer similar efficiency however the upfront costs of investing in such plants would be large and competitor's would be able to choose cheaper manufacturing regions to give themselves competitive advantage, i.e. Vietnam. The benefit of Foxconn is their expertise, they are brilliant Taiwanese engineers who manufacture in mainland China and make bringing a product to market simpler and cheaper. If the product fails they simply stop making it as a small part of their huge business where Apple investing in its own factories is more high risk.
