I dont get what you mean by this, can you explain? (Not to startvan argument, im just curious)
Also there is some truth to what he said. It looks like switch is more successor to vita then anything. Looking at the current japanese support, it has some things going for it that suggest there will be plenty of softwarr in the future that will be ps4/switch multiplat insteaf of ps4vita.
We will get a better understanding of this in the near future of course. Vita sales are dropping but i dont think its mostly due to the switch as mang pointed out it was already going down. Minecraft was the reason it did hold on so surprisingly well this paat year and half. |
That the consoles don't immediately die. They trickle out. PS2 still had multiplats of games in 2008 for Japan. It takes a long time for studios to phase out successful systems. Switch is obviously the death knell of the 3DS, but studios are going to slowly move off of it like they did with PS2 and PS3.
If anyone wonders..
DS sold 572k in the year of 3DS....
GBA sold 575k in the year of DS...
3DS has sold 482k within 15 weeks of 2017 ( year of switch )...
If it keeps selling 24k on average for the rest 4 weeks, 3DS will have sold more than what DS/GBA sold in 2005/2011 respectively in just 19 weeks of 2017...
As for yoy sales changes...
DS had sold 276k between Jan-first two weeks of april down by 620k compared to 2010 ( 3ds launch in the first week of march )
GBA had sold 190k between Jan-fiist two weaks of april down by 774k compared to 2004 (ds launched in mid December )
3DS has sold 482k bwtween Jan-first two weaks of april up by 18k compared to 2016 ( switch launched in the first week of march )

What some people who are saying here that systems which are being replaced retain an exceptional sales trend
( given the circumstances ) is way wrong for Japan, that happens in the west...
I haven't check for ps2 though, but it's not a good metric since the price difference that ps3 by the time it was released vs ps2 had, was the whopping 49000 yen...
This is not to claim that switch isn't perceived as 3DS successor too because of 3DS sales being unaffected by the switch launch...
It could just be that switch doesn't have 3DS bc ( as previous handheld consoles had with their successor ) , is expensive as a handheld console ( at least in comparison with 3DS, especially with 2DS which might be the reason for 3DS being yoy up ) , no handheld console ips yet ( MH, YW, PMN, AC), and it's hardware nature ( not as much portable as a handheld console lover would like, plus being a hardware that have some similarities with wii u, a handheld part with a wide screen and a stationary part), even though all these could make some to thing that's not also 3DS successor hah.
In my opinion the biggest factor is the price and by extend the easiness of rebuyability in case of system broking down.
Also, the recently release MHXX ableit it's the 5th game on 3DS on its 6th year, but to be honest since MH games run better on new 3ds, some people are possibily upgrading.
Anyway, a great thing happening for Nintendo, they have two systems that account for the 72.5% of total weekly hardware sales.

That's why I said 'yet' and 'it seems'. It is possible that later with more games and maybe a lower price more people transition from 3DS to Switch.

Here's a comparison of the Switch with the previous two gens of Nintendo and PS: It is worth pointing out that the Wii was a holiday release, but it still managed an impressive baseline after the holidays. It was incredibly front-loaded in Japan, though, even more so than in the West, peaking in 2007 as opposed to peaking in 2008 like it did in the West. Here's an annoted chart of Wii sales:
That impressive baseline rapidly dropped later that year before rebounding for the holidays and on into the first half of '08, before its baseline permanently dropped to below 40k/week in Q3. But even with those impressive early baseline numbers, it still pulled "only" 3.9M in all of 2007, whereas the 3DS sold 4.28M in 2011 despite having a far less impressive initial baseline: |
Thanks! These are great!
