Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will Sony ever surpass Nintendo's total hardware shipment?

There seems to be a weird amount of tension in this thread...I don't really get why to be honest

I think it's pretty obvious why. Some people are way too passionate about their favourite company. They don't mind calling others names if they say anything remotely bad about it, so this is hardly surprising.

When Nintendo stop making Hardware.. sure why not.

Probably not, probably don't think Sony gives much of a crap anyway.

As long as each Playstation console hits 100 million and they make good money off of it, I'm sure they're pleased.

They ought to be because as a company they don't exactly have a ton of golden assets these days. Ain't nobody breaking down the doors to buy Sony TVs, smartphones, tablets, audio systems, etc.

Why 100m? Whats so magical about selling 100m compared to 50m.

What if Sony sold 60m PS4s and 40m PS4 Pros?

Is the PS3 a failed console to Sony because it didnt reach 100m?

Just curious to know why 100m sales mean so much?

They don't have much time anyway, I think dedicated gaming hardware will largely be gone in 15-20 years, replaced by streaming services through Fiber Optic or other high speed internet connections and games that can be streamed from one's phone onto any display in their vicinity. By then the processing power even in a phone will be able to produce extremely high end visuals and every modern display will be a smart display capable of receiving a video signal from a smart device without needing a wire.

All you'll need is a wireless controller that the phone can sync to.

Sony is the king of consoles now, surpassing ninty hardware sales is moot.

To many variables.

Does Sony roll out a PS4 Laptop? PS4 Phone? PS4 Handheld? These could quickly shift things in their favor.

Will Nintendo bring out a Switch Light? Switch Pro? Switch Phone? Again huge moves that could make it impossible for Sony to catch up.

The market right now is in a massive state of flux. The line between consoles, phones, tablets, PCs, set top boxes, and such is getting more and more blurry by the year. Sony and Nintendo have to reach for new ground, because Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and many more are not slowing down. If If Sony and Nintendo refuse to build a broader ecosystem of hardware, then they will have no viability in the future. We could very likely see Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV replace consoles if these two don't start to open up. In all honesty Xbox looks best set for the long term with its Universal Windows Apps, and ever expanding capabilities. Gamers of the past may be happy with consoles that function as dedicated games devices, but these kids coming up expect more.

So, can Sony pass Nintendo? Absolutly, but it would take them changing the game, and I don't think they will do it. If I had to put it all on the line I would say, Sony never passes Nintendo, and both companies will no longer be in the hardware business within the next 15 - 20 years.

Nah, Nintendo had too much of a head start, there's not enough time for Sony to catch up before gaming leaves consoles behind.

Sony (Since PS1) - 501.4m

Nintendo (Since N64) - 470.44m

Sony has outperformed Nintendo on hardware sales over the same timeframe, but due to the massive success of the DS and Wii not by much. If nintendo never hit those heights again (which is more likely than not). It'd still take too long, I don't think we'll see a PlayStation 6.

I guess. This just seems like such an innocuous thing that I don't get why someone would be emotionally invested in it one way or another.

Like, this makes no difference to anyone or anything whatsoever.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I think I use the wrong word here. What I mean by "foreseeable future" is assuming both Sony and Nintendo is stick to the current path and will follow current sales trajectory. Also assuming neither of them will pull another Wii again. Anyway I'll gonna remove that from the title to prevent confusion.

Considering the sales predictions and opinions that people have voiced regarding Switch, we are witnessing another Wii right now. So that's a terrible assumption to make.

What do you mean by this? Even the most negative outlook had Switch more than doubling the sales of Wii U. Unless you're stating that the Switch is well on it's way to 100+ million territory.

This is definitely going to happen in the future!
The only reason why Nintendo is still ahead is that they started way earlier than Sony.
