Forums - Website Topics - Will this site ever track digital sales?

With digital continuing to make up a greater share of games' overall sales, the sales tracked here for recent games are already too low. This problem is inevitably only going to become worse and, for this reason, VGChartz really needs to find a way to track digital. So, will digital sales ever be tracked, and if so, then how?

I've heard them talk about it years ago, but as you can see that hasn't happened. I always desired a three-way system, where it shows physical sales, digital sales and total sales, but I don't know if something like that will ever be realized.

It's becoming a bit of problem right now and is going to most likely increase in the future, as it means the numbers are never going to be fully representative of a game's true overall sales. Official numbers of Pokémon Sun and Moon hit 14.69 million by the end of December while VGChartz physical only numbers are at 13.24m by March 11th, so it's quite a big difference, showing the need for one day adding in digital sales too.

Those Pokemon numbers from Nintendo are by the end of 2016, not January.

I think it was said that some games have 1/3 of its sales coming from digital. Sometimes higher. It will become more and more common going forward as not even 3 years ago the norm was around 10% IIRC. This site needs to figure out a way to track digital sales otherwise the sales numbers become more and more irrelevant here.

You're right my mistake, and wow that game is crazy! It's probably almost by now the highest selling 3DS game, X and Y was at 16.06 million by the end of December 2016 so it's definitely going to happen eventually.

Yes, it's probably at 16-17 million by now.

This might be a dumb question but, how do you track digital in the first place? The only thing you can really do is estimate based on past ratios for genres and other games in series right?

That's a cool idea; I now share in your desire to see that :D

Maybe just add on 10%...? But even just updating major games to their offical numbers when ever they're announced would be something I'd settle for.
