Switch.......

Switch is a hybrid device. It is a handheld when it needs to be and a home console when it needs to be. More importantly, it is a handheld where it needs to be (hint: Japan) and a home console where it needs to be (hint: NA/EUR).

It's time to stop trying to fit the Switch's round peg into the square & triangle holes of the "handheld" and "home console" nomenclature.

yep, its a hybrid which means it still counts as a "handheld gaming device" as well as a "home console".

Semantics. It is both, therefore it is neither. Rol put it well:

The catch is that Switch can't be used to gauge the state of the handheld market because virtually nobody is going to use the console exclusively as handheld. A like-for-like comparison with handhelds of the past is simply impossible.

We can't measure the size of the handheld market by looking at Switch sales any more than we can claim home consoles are making a comeback in Japan if it becomes a huge hit there.

Therefore it's better to identify the motivations behind arguments. What people who say that the handheld market is shrinking or dying really want to say is that Nintendo is in trouble. The rebuttal is that Switch is doing fine. There's no reason to make things more complicated than they need to be.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

As i said before, the Switch changes nothing about Nintendo's aproach to home consoles from the Wii U. You can simply move away with the gamepad.

Sony and Microsoft and the biggest third parties are focusing on the pro and scorpio, the switch is less than the X1.

No one can expect third party games that will be designed to push the market to come out in low fps low res or with missing asset formats for the switch. It defeats the purpose and makes their game look bad.

I am not willing to waste my time debating fairy tales, so don't bother. Just cause i know Nintendo fans will flip at anything that isn't praise.

I dont recall the PS3 or X360 failing because it lacked these IPs.

WiiU on the other hand...

3DS on the other hand...

Still did worse than PS3 and 360. I don't see where you're possibly going with this one.

Do you also agree that we'll never truly be able to determine the fate of the "handheld" market due to the popularization of hybrid machines? That's all I was getting at. I don't foresee any major company launching a dedicated only-handheld gaming device in the future.

Why do people continue to name the 1st party games when the thread is about 3rd party games? What exactly is the point of brining them up in this manner?

Games are games, most people dont care if its 1st, 2nd or 3rd party, if it interests them than that is all that matters.

the point is that people constantly say Nintendo is missing out on various games and these people are pointing out that it goes both ways.

PS/XB have hundreds of games not on Nintendo devices just like Nintendo devices have hundreds of games not on PS/XB.

While that is all true it does not change the fact that the topic is about major 3rd party releases that the Switch will possibly miss. Brining up their 1st party games can be seen as nothing but deflection from the topic at hand. Everyone knows it goes both ways when it comes to 1st party games and exclusives that is plain as day for every system. So what would be the reason in brining the up in a thread about major 3rd party multiplat releases?

But the topic at hand (which could have been written better imo) is about 3rd party games. Seeing what impact if any they will have on the Switch by appearing or not appearing on it.

I can't take the gamepad to the bathroom. I can take the switch to the plane.

Nintendo doesn't need third parties to sell the switch.

Switch doesn't need Destiny and Battlefront, what it needs are the likes of Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest.
