Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why is Splatoon 2 still stuck at 720p? Why are most Switch games full HD?

Yes, and we already have Splatoon on Wii U running at 720p/60fps.

Yes, but Splatoon 2 <> Splatoon 1

Perhaps they want to use the performance difference for bigger levels, more details/effects... instead of just copying Splatoon 1 with higher resolution.

Again nothing what wee saw until now doesn't make big difference compared to Splatoon 1, it seems that Switch could easily run Splatoon 2 at higher resolution in docked mode than 720p.

I definitely expecting higher resolution at launch of game.

I'm sure Nintendo will do the best they can. Maybe the graphics present a higher challenge to the cpu's than many other games and both portable and docked are 1ghz with only 3 cores available to games. Still more powerful than wii u.

Also if this is a heavy online game and the main cpu's are partly responsible for wifi processing that could be a reason. Mario kart is fairly simple with regard's online functionality but there will surely be a lot more data getting moved about with Splatoon. On the wii u they cut down the number of cars in online races because it didn't have the cpu power on need for speed most wanted compared to ps3 and 360. Online gaming is surprisingly cpu intensive.

wii u had a dedicated arm chip for its OS, nothing special but meant all 3 ppc cores were available for games and a dsp for audio (very limited with no compression functionality but got the job done) and I think its wifi chip had dedicated processing so wii u had some assistance from support chips. Most mobile technology often makes use of the main processors for sub tasks to reduce silicon size and improve battery life where its more efficient to have one chip doing multiple tasks than have a wide range of different chips doing different tasks.

One exception is intel with their atom chipsets which often rely on support chips and are not as popular as arm based designs. Intel weren't used to doing tablet chipsets and ended up having to dump their chipsets on the market probably at a loss probably because of this lack of integration. Just making the point that mobile chipsets often under-perform compared to their expected performance based on their specification. So I think heavy use of wifi is likely to erode some performance elsewhere.

i have to agree, there's no reason for this game to be 720, but since we still have a long way to release i think the res will be bumped up, they are probably focusing on the performance and gameplay first.

Im hoping it will end up being 720p in handheld and 1080p in docked, should be possible right? or close to this, maybe a dynamic resolution, you don't see that often in nintendo games.

We don't know that CPU processing was the reason for that; it could just as likely have been so that it was easier to get a full house on the vastly smaller userbase.

Even Zelda BotW that's actually buy far most demanding Wii U games is 900p.
Splatoon 2 is 2.5 months away from release, I think resolution at launch will be higher.

To be fair, we've also had Snake Pass running at 675p docked, so it's not like it's unprecedented to have a lower resolution than 900p, though I do agree that Splatoon 2 does look pretty much the same as the first game which ran at 720p on Wii U, so you'd think Switch would be able to hand in 900p at least, particularly when FAST RMX and Mario Kart 8 are 1080p/60fps.

It will be interesting to see what the resolution is for games like Mario Odyssey.

I believe it'll be because of Splitscreen, don't see any other reason why they would give the amiibo the ability to save your loadout so you can take it to friends house and use on their Switch.

But you can take your Switch to a friend's house just as easily as bringing an amiibo.

It should be really telling then that despite this Nintendo still gave the amiibo that functionality.

Yes, but Snake Pass even on PS4 running at 864p, so definitely not best game for comparison with Splatoon 2. We still don't know what will be final resolution for Splatoon 2. Not just that Fast RMX and MK8D are 1080p, it seems that ARMS is also 1080p/60fps.

I expecting 1080p or at least 900p for Mario Odyssey.

It still means that there's a precedent for resolutions below 900p when docked though, and I'm sure that as time goes on there will be other examples, just as there are multiple examples of Xbox One and even PS4 games running below 900p. Has there been any confirmation on ARMS's resolution? I haven't seen any yet, still waiting on DF to cover it.

If Mario Odyssey runs at 60fps as its youtube trailer suggests, I wouldn't be surprised to see it running at 900p or 720p docked considering how good its graphics look. (Easily best looking Switch game so far I reckon)

I think that DF reported that ARMS was running at 1080p even in january. For now from launched 1st party games or Wii U ports, only Zelda BotW is below 1080p and still not single 720p game.

I wouldn't take Mario Odyssey YouTube trailer like proof of resolution, because thats was in January and Mario Odyssey is holiday game. I would surprised if game is 720p, because until now we saw that Switch is much more capable than Wii U and it seems that Switch has power to run Mario Odyssey at higher resolution than 720p, also it seems that Nintendo with Switch is aiming at higher resolution than 720p.

60 FPS over everything! Splatoon had big problems when multiple player were throwing bombs etc. . Splatoon 2 shouldn't have this.

Also MK8D and Splatoon can not really be compared as MK8 mechanics allow for much higher online latency whereas Splatoon is more like a fighting game.

One of the biggest problems could be the calculation of the ink drops. Those are really fascinating and I can imagine that moving up the resolution wouldn't scale that well in terms of time needed....
