Alot of good movies. Shame they don't make 'em like they used to.

Giving the player control over the "camera" was a big deal, especially for games with a 3D engine. And it ain't that important if that additional input to the movement of the character is done via digital or analog sticks, d-pad buttons, c-buttons, keys, mouse movements or touch gestures.

Neither Nintendo nor Sony were using this "free look" first... it had been done years before that on PC, Mac and even a few arcade machines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_look

Gun Buster (only left + right), Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Doom (only left + right), Dark Forces, Heretic, Marathon...

N64 was a beast in the NA market... for most of the 5th gen PS1 vs N64 was on the same level as Genesis vs SNES here during the 16 bit wars.  The N64 launch was the biggest console launch ever up to that point in NA, and that was with just 2 games at launch, neither of which were packed in.

Sadly, its long and frequent software droughts and the fact that the console never really took off in Japan the way PS1 and even the Saturn did with a more Japanese-centric library sealed its fate.  By the end of '98 PS1 was the clear leader and the N64 could never catch up even with its stellar lineup of AAA 1st and 2nd party titles.

PS1 might have had the larger, more diverse library overall, but like Nintendo's old mantra, I'll take quality over quantity any day.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Good thing then that the PS1 number of quality titles far exceed the N64's. I'll take 30 quality titles over 10.

But how important is that really? Most people when buying a console decide it based on the number of games they want and how much they want them, not based on the percentage of games released for the console that are good. And, 102.5 million people vs 33 million people decided that the PS1 had the more appealing library.

"Quality over quantity" was kinda Nintendo's PR mantra to put a spin on what a stupid decision it was to use cartridges solely.

Every system should have both.

Nintendo is really terrible at in-generation adjustments too, ever notice that? It's like once a generation starts they basically are helpless to change/adjust course, they still probably could've released a CD-add-on as late as 1998 and seen considerable benefit from doing so, but they just had to let the entire generation burn in flames before accepting optical media the next time around.

64DD should've been shit-canned ages earlier in favor of a 64CD. Once that thing was delayed for like the 5th time someone really needed to step up in their board meetings and talk some sense into Yamauchi.
