I'm realizing how stupid the salary cap is. Imagine if any other business put a limit on how much money their workers could make. And before people complain about athletes making too much, remember that their owners are already rich and they make tons of money from the sport!

heh, as a European salary caps seem stupid to me by default. So does many other things in American leagues, like players being owned by the league and tied to specific teams and stuff. When are y'all gonna unionise and fix that?

I don't think anything' going to change, it's just more profitable this way. American sports teams do much better financially than European teams. There are other stupid things about North American sports. One example is territorial rights. Even though my city has almost 400,000 people, there's no way Toronto would let us have a professional team even though it's 2.5 hours away from here! Unlike in England where pretty much any city can set up a professional team.

OK guys, so I have some cleaning and homework to do, but after I accomplish that, I'll be able to update the thread.

Calgary refuses to build a new arena, NHL warns them the Flames could relocate. I hope the city of Calgary doesn't balk.

It's gotten to this point? Holy moly. A friend from Alberta was just explaining to me a few days ago that it's a poor venue for concerts, which I didn't know. It'll be intertesting to see what happens, but I'm betting their will be no relocation, and the NHL will get it's coveted American Pacific Northwest team via expansion with the new Seattle arena on the way.

heh, that is pretty silly as well. Yeah, it is more profitable, monopolies usually are But it doesn't give the players/fans as much freedom as they perhaps should have. Although their salaries aren't exactly small so there's not too much incentive on their side to try and change it and fans usually seem entertained enough to not demand their cities get teams too much. Too bad Quebec is still being overlooked on that front though, perhaps next time?

The NHL would rather put have teams play in empty arenas in Florida and Arizona.

I expect an expansion sometime in the future to balance out the divisions, I guess Seattle would be the perfect choice.

I mean, I guess that kind of makes sense in a way though. The aim is to grow hockey's popularity in those areas over the long term by having teams there right? If it works then that should result in more revenue for all teams. Of course if it doesn't work (which seems to be the case so far) it just looks like a dumb move

You play the NHL games? Do you have to import them?

The main obstacle is the teams in southern USA are mainly popular when they do well. So to grow the popularity they would have to be good all the time. I can't really blame them when they also have NFL, MLB and NBA teams to follow.

Sorry for not updating today, had a fridge break, caused unintended troubles!
