Nice to see that with that poll some people are looking at breath of the wild as it really is in retrospect. HZD is so much better and much more innovative than BOW, My mate deleted my account of 20 or so hours so he can start his game (Thanks for that Nintendo) and I was a bit upset for a while until I realized I had played over 20 hours and I'm still dragging my way through it, good game, better than skyward sword for sure but it's no where near the hyperbole and 100% scores.

I'm sorry John but having played both, I think Horizon is a fantastic, good game, but it's nowhere as polished and fun as Breath of the Wild. The animal AI and animations are dreadful, the personnality mechanic for Aloy is gimmicky and the environment, although beautifully designed, is kind of stale with very little interactions. And also: writing is kind of underwhelming. So yeah... I can't agree when you say Horizon is more innovative, I can't.

Userbase isnt really relevant IMO, no one would expected Horizon to sell more than Zelda back last year even with knowledge of the Switch staring from nothing. Its less to do with Zelda and more to do with how Horizon outdone expectation. It has done in one month what most playstation IPs (Killzone, Infamous, Resistance, Ratchet etc) struggled to do LT back on the PS3's huge userbase.

Well, The Legend of Zelda hasn't really historically had massive first week sales, instead usually relying on consistent long term sales to reach their excellent numbers, so it's not really that big of a surprise that Horizon outsold it first week. Breath of the Wild's first week sales numbers seem to be pretty much in line with Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.

You are right  but it could be argued that you are talking about an untested New IP and 55 mill means more Games so more competion against a Franchise that is legendary  with a 97 rating and was allways going to have a superb sales ratio in regards to hardware sales.

Some valid points but I'm trying to think of an adoption inhibitor greater than the supply shortage that hit the Switch early on and I'm coming up short. I'm going to guess not many people are going to buy a game for a platform they don't, or more appropriately, can't own yet...

What other titles released for the PS4 around the time of Horizon's release?

Well, jan, feb and march have had lots of highly praised games so I guess one could argue it goes against potential Horizon sales. I for instance haven't bought it since I have so many potential games I want to buy now (RE7, Nioh, Nier, Persona 5, etc...)

I don't think it's as big of a factor anyway

I'm surprised considering it's a new ip and had ton of competition. Switch only has botw.

Is it really that surprising considering it's an installbase of 55m vs. 15m (13 coming from a dead system). Zelda will most likely out leg it.

It's also an exclusive, new IP, with that same console having thousands of other games to play, a whole host of major releases out around the same time too, versus Botw, which is a well loved and extensive franchise with a pre established fan base , multi platform and for the one platform still relevant pretty much the only retail game worth buying, and a launch game at that, making it the go-to game for people buying the new console,so that argument doesn't work here.

All these comments about comparing BotW with it's small base vs Horizon's larger one makes me wonder more so, How does BotW compare to Twilight Princess's FW sales?

Of course it does. The Wii U is a dead platform. The Switch is sold out virtually everywhere. BOTW has a very limited amount of people it can sell to.

And yeah, Horizon is a new IP. But a heavily marketed, very safe IP, by a very popular Sony developer. It's not as if it was Nier or something. Not that Nier is a new IP.

of course its relevant, you cant expect a game to sell 2 million on an install base of ~1.5 million.

also alot of people on this site expected Horizon to do better or do you not remember the, "will Horizon outshine Zelda" thread?
