Forums - Gaming Discussion - Games released this gen you think will and won't age well?

In say, 10 years from now, what are some of the games released this generation that will have aged particularly well or poorly?

Breath of the Wild will age VERY well. It will last long due to the art style and physics. Heck, I think most Nintendo games (besides Starfox Zero) will age pretty well.

For Sony, Uncharted will probably stand the test of time. It'll definitely look outdated, but the visuals are great enough to last for quite some time.

I personally don't see No Man's Sky aging well. There will probably be a space explorer game which will blow it out of the water. Unfortunate, but it leaves me hoping for a game with the gameplay of Minecraft, but with a different artstyle.

Well, if VR technology advances into something bigger, the original PSVR games will probably become very outdated.

I'd say a bunch of Open world games won't age very well. Devs aren't trying to innovate the genre as much as increasing the scale. I think, and hope, we will reach a point where size in games starts to negatively affect them, so we'll start seeing smaller games with more replay value and content per area. Specially less "12 times the size of X" or "3 billion planets" as a selling point.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

For Sony I think Ratchet and Clank, Horizon and Uncharted will remain looking amazing for quite some time. Games like Infamous, Killzone Shadowfall and Driveclub will look a bit outdated by next gen. But I doubt they will ever become ugly. I don't think PS3 exclusives like GOW 3 are ugly where I did think that of GOW 1 after playing three.

Also games that don't have HDR won't age very well if you put up R&C against a PS3 R&C or any cartoonish game it looks dull. Fuck it even Zelda looks dull against a HDR supporting game R&C especially BOTW, which colour palette isn't my cup of tea. The lack of HDR for Switch is going to be problematic in 3 years. Just looking at Horizon vs Witcher III which boven have a beatiful open world the lightning in HZD just tops every other open world on PS4.

You should look at the difference between fast rmx and Wipeout Omega. Where one does support HDR and the other one doesn't it looks so much duller in my opinion.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Breath of the wild will age very gracefully. Horizon Zero Dawn will age poorly. It's already outdated compared to Zelda and hopefully we'll get past the fixation on motion blur and bloom all over the screen.

For VR games, Rez Infinite will age very well, it already did. Stuff like Robinson is already outdated. All VR games that limit your movement will age very poorly. The sooner the teleport mechanic is forgotten, the better.

Order 1886 will probably age really poorly. Graphically it will probably be fine but the film grain will hurt it and its already a mediocre game at best, so I don't see a quick-time filled game holding up to well. Uncharted might buckle a bit but I think it will mostly hold up 10 years from now. Killzone Shadowfall's graphics will probably look a little uncanny valley as graphics get more realistic.

Persona 5 will age amazingly, I mean it's a turn based RPG with a non realistic art style.

Any Realistic game, like Uncharted, won't age great but I think The Order 1886 and Ryse are the two who take the throne on aging horribly, since in both games the most impressive part was the Graphics. I would have to take The Order as #1 since Ryse is available on PC and offers much higher graphical fidellity and options on that platform.

Games that will age well like Persona, Zelda and stuff are obvious choices and I have to give a shoutout to Ratchet and Clank and Sunset Overdrive because good gameplay and humour never gets old. I would have to give the throne to Inside however for the game that will age the best.
