My point is that the Scorpio will be competing with the Pro, not the OG PS4.  I don't think many people are that interested in a mid-gen upgrade.  But, those that are would most likely chose a Pro if there is a $100-$150 difference and the first one is just $299.  If the difference is larger, then forget about it.

Scorpio is competing with the Playstation 4, Playstation 4 Pro, Switch, heck even with the Xbox One S.

Also, the Scorpio isn't going to do anything for their brand if it's bought by the same Halo fans that already bought the XBO for Halo, while pricing themselves out of most gamer's price range.

I don't think you get it. Scorpio doesn't need to be cheap or in a gamers price range for it to do it's job.
Visit most gaming websites and the talk has been about the Playstation 4, most reviews are done with Playstation 4 copies.
Allot of advertising showcases the games on Playstation 4 or PC hardware because of their superior levels of fidelity.

Most graphics and performance comparisons  (Such as those done by Digital Foundry) show the Xbox One on bottom, Playstation 4 in the middle and Playstation 4 Pro on top, people then associate the Playstation Brand as being superior, Scorpio reverses all of that entirely.

Think about it, nVidia doesn't release the nVidia Titan X because it sells so many cards... They release it to be better than the competition... It's a Halo product.
The result is that, even if AMD has superior low-end or mid-range hardware, people associate nVidia as being technically superior... Even if they could never afford such a GPU.
When benchmarks are performed, it's usually with nVidia's high-end hardware on top of the list... That Titan X GPU or even the Geforce 1080 is essentially advertising for the entire product stack and that resonates with consumers.

Doesn't help that Halo games will be playable on a PC, either.  And yes, it doesn't need to match the XBO sales, but it does need to sell several million to be a success.  Otherwise, they just wasted a bunch of money on R&D and production for little in return.

I personally don't see any problem with having all Xbox One games on PC. If I like a game, chances are I get it on both platforms anyway.
I don't see consoles as a replacement for the PC or vice versa. I don't actually care about exclusives, I actually find them to be a con, not a pro.
I hate my games being restricted to a singular platform.

Whether mainline Halo will be released on PC in future remains to be seen... Halo Wars wasn't a mainline game, honestly I hope Halo 6 does come to PC.

Simple answer for your second quote: PS2.  Best selling console and Sony was going to launch its successor just 5 years after its launch.  Only thing that stopped them was hitting a snag on the PS3 development, so it came out 6 years after.  Which would be the exact age the PS4 would be if the PS5 launches in 2019.  Just because the new console is out, doesn't mean sales for the much cheaper previous console dies.

Well. That's actually not a good example. Because the Playstation 3 launched a year later after the competition launched new consoles.

But you also need to keep in mind that this generation is unique, we have never had half-generation console releases like this, prior examples tend to become irrelevant due to that fact.

MS is not Nvidia.  They want to sell HW/SW, and at a profit.  Technically, so does Nvidia, but they need to seem like the best GPU maker to continue to get sales, even of their lower end cards.  But, do you honestly think if MS start losing a bunch of money on the Xbox HW because they are selling so few units, they are going to continue to make it?  Hell no.  They've already sucked so much funding out of the XBox division that it's apparent to even the most casual gamer.  Hell, even the reveal of the Scorpio is proof.  No huge hooray, just release the info and let DF deal with it.

And there's nothing wrong with them putting games on the PC if they want to sell more SW units.  But it sure isn't a positive anymore for buying the XBO.  To get EVERYTHING, you no longer need a XBO.  PC, PS4, and Switch.  I'm also pretty sure Halo 6 is coming to PC, since they announced all future games were Play Anywhere.

The PS2 is a bad example because the PS3 launched after its competition?  How does that make any sense?  Especially if you read where I stated that Sony wanted to launch it earlier, but ran into a development snag.  It wasn't by design that it came out after 6 years of the PS2 launch or after the competition.  And maybe we haven't had such overhauled mid-gen upgrades, but we have always gotten them.  It's not like they are selling so well Sony will want to delay the PS5, anyway.

I find it funny that the beginning of the generation was littered with digital foundry comparisons of 3rd party titles between the bone and the ps4, and resolution this, resolution that, and no props for Microsoft having the majority of exclusives at that time.

It was all good for everyone to be power hungry when ps4 was the most powerful console.........

Now...........none of that stuff matters........4k? no thanks.....1080 is fine with me.

Agreed. These guys were going crazy over one game having more grass than the other one. Shit was totally overblown and ridiculous.

No worthwhile exclusive---no buy. I will stick with PC/Switch/PS4.

Hi

Direct X and game changer quotes please.

I am surprised by some people on the internet, tbh.
"It's what you expect a year la ter from the Pro" but "No way this is going to cost $399, not with that hardware!"
Eh? So what is it now? I think it's perfectly reasonable to think it's going to be $399 and it is a substantial upgrade for everyone who owns an XBO or a vanilla PS4 and it will be the most powerful system when it releases and potentially every game will look best on this console in the console space. Best performance, best graphics, best resolution.

2 things

The scorpio isn't now, it's holiday season this year

do you think the suggested specs will be playing titles at 4k/60fps?

Do you think Forza 7 will not be 4k/60fps?

Do you really think that's because of the 'power gap' and that userbase doesn't play a much bigger factor?
Did the XBox scoop up all the multiplat reviews from the ps2?
Did the WiiU scoop up all the multiplat reviews from ps3 and 360?
Advertising showcases it for the system that payed for the advertisement...

DF will still call PC superior but compare it to Scorpio instead of the pro and call Scorpio the best premium console experience, ps4 best base console experience. Then people asking about the Switch in the comments...

This whole most powerful console thing might have some influence at the start of a gen, yet do you really think it will make a difference now? Scorpio will mostly sell to the existing hardcore userbase just as ps4 pro is doing. The late arrival new console buyer is a late arrival for a reason. They don't want to shell out $400 or $500 for a console. The battle will still be between ps4 slim and xbox one s.

With the hardware listed here? No it wont be true 4k/60

Fancy hearing me on an amateur podcast with friends gushing over one of my favourite games? https://youtu.be/1I7JfMMxhf8

Turn 10 managed to deliver a 1080p60 game on Xbox One at launch and you want to tell me that hardware that is more than 4x that in terms of GPU power is not able to run a Forza game at 4k/60? Seriously? I mean, why not? What is your reasoning?
