Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox Scorpio's Hype Justified by it's Hardware specs

Specwise, there's a lot of potental. But racing games are probably one of the easiest real-time action genres to showcase specs in action. So to say that running Forza left another 33% power unused could really mean anything at this point.

For me, after the debacle that was the XBO launch downgrades, I'll wait to actually see these games in action on a Youtuber's Scorpio.  Especially when it comes to the Forza franchise.  What MS tried to get away with Forza 5 and Jimmy Fallon was just awful.

Good for those who are excited for it. Based on the games I have played in native 4k, it is nothing to brag about.  I just rather wait for new gen consoles.

Hardware wise for sure, but what about the games?
1 screenshot of Forza 7 running in 4K for a console reveal...

Maybe that was the framerate it's running at so far? the console is around 8 months away? :)

Joking aside though, for the Xbox fans who want the highest frame rate and resolution while playing their games I could see some of them being interested in this system, for someone with a broader knowledge of actual enthusiast gaming they will most likely be playing those games on a PC.

For myself personally I think having spent close to 100 hours lost in Hyrule on a system which quite possibly has less power behind it than last gen systems (played almost exclusively in handheld mode) I have to say... I'm 100% certain that power of the cpu/gpu in a console is certainly not the thing which excites me anymore, I have my PS4 for current generation games, PC for wider range of games and Switch for sheer joy, I don't currently have a gap in my gaming where the X1Scorp would fill, but in 8 months time we'll have to see how the price and marketing has advanced to colour me hyped for this rather beastly console.

I find it funny that the beginning of the generation was littered with digital foundry comparisons of 3rd party titles between the bone and the ps4, and resolution this, resolution that, and no props for Microsoft having the majority of exclusives at that time.

It was all good for everyone to be power hungry when ps4 was the most powerful console.........

Now...........none of that stuff matters........4k? no thanks.....1080 is fine with me.

For people who are really into that, sure. But people who really care about hard core specs are probably on high end PCs.

I don't care about 4k. I passed on the Pro and I'll pass on Scorpio, too.

I would say features like Beast mode in the ps4pro do have something to offer for the 1080p viewer now, and no doubt if the X1Scorp is a % more powerful than the pro it will feature a similar mode for making sure even the 1080p users get some bonus joy from it.

That said, I do agree with you on the PC side of things, I really think when we look back over every console generation, Megahurtz has never been the number 1 selling system at the end of a generation, the PS4 was the anomaly in this race for power until the Scorpion was announced so it can return to being the case that the most powerful machine in a generation was not the highest selling one.

I guess... if Xbox brand has fully dropped the generational consoles then currently the Switch is the most powerful Ninth Generation system and also the best selling one.

It was Forza 6, not Forza 7. The latter will probably be revealed at E3.

2 things

The scorpio isn't now, it's holiday season this year

do you think the suggested specs will be playing titles at 4k/60fps?

The same cpu running 9.5% faster than the ps4 pro...
Weren't there rumors of 4x L2 cache etc?

It will run multiplat games better than ps4 pro, about the same difference as xbox one and ps4. Both aren't needed. Show me what it can do for VR, then I might get interested.

The rumors about 4x L2 cache was actually correct. But it ended up being for the GPU, not the CPU. (Which I originally stipulated when those rumors first began, but had hopes it would be for the CPU.)

The clock rate doesn't tell us the whole story, Scorpio has a big CPU advantage over the Playstation 4 Pro.
The CPU is still garbage, but it's going to be doing allot less work, which means overall, more cycles to developers.

Getting a Jaguar instead of Rysen is worse than getting an X1 instead of an X2.

Ryzen was never going to happen.

People built unrealistic expectations and ignored what the tech expert opinions were... And of course got let down.

it's very likely also an "evolved" polaris, as it was said that PS4 Pro has features beyond what's in standard polaris aswell

There is still the potential for it to be Vega as well. The memory bus and memory controller is obviously a significant deviation from Polaris, plus there are more CU's than a fully enabled Polaris and other customizations.

Its also a slight letdown, based specifically on the hype and rumors though, not what was actually shown. The 245w PSU is the most impressive to me. Pro is 310w. WOW.

The PSU could be more efficient than Sonys. So they might have been able to get away with a lower wattage unit.

The biggest question I have right now is how large is the overall shell of this thing? Is that outline around the internals supposed to indicate the shell size of the XB1 or the XB1S maybe?

Before the Scorpio details released there was a leak that the console was going to use a "Groundbreaking and new" cooling design. (Which is blatantly false...)

And I stated it's likely using a vapour chamber approach, which I ended up being right about.
Vapour Chambers are amazing at getting a large amount of thermal energy dissipated in a small and confined space, which is why GPU's use it... Microsoft has likely taken that advantage and applied it to the consoles overall form factor.

The original Xbox One had an oversized, over-engineered cooling solution which resulted in a console with a significant amount of height, Vapour Chamber cooling side steps that.

Also the cooling system, seems like its well thought out (much better than the way the Xbox One was).

To be fair, the Xbox One's cooling system was cheaper to manufacture. And extremely quiet.

This one does 4k checkerboarding..... this one does native 4k... hmmm.

Both do 4k Checkerboarding.

Might want to manage expectations considering a gtx 1080 struggles with 4k gaming.

This. Plus we have only seen Forza running at Xbox One levels of imagry running at 4k. We need to see more games to get an appropriate idea of the consoles abilities.

I'm going to say no. I'm sure Xbox fans will be happy, but for the mainstream, I doubt the advantage it has over the Pro is going to warrant the $100-$150 price difference. Hell, if MS actually prices this at $499, like many expect, and Sony still decide to go super aggressive and drop the Pro to $299, that's a $200 difference.

If Price is your argument. Please keep in mind that the Xbox One S is going to still be on the market which will be the more low-budget Xbox One console.

Microsoft has stated they fully expect the regular Xbox One to have better sales than Scorpio. And with how the Pro has sold against the regular Playstation 4, that's also a realistic expectation.

With that, Scorpio is a Halo product, it doesn't need to sell up-teenth millions of hardware units to be successfull, it just needs to bring attention to the Xbox Platform as a whole.

thismeintiel said:
That's not even mentioning the beastly PS5 we'll start hearing about sometime next year.

That's provided this console generation doesn't end up extended. The technology isn't going to exist for a few more years yet for a true next-gen to kick off anyway.

Plus Sony is less inclined to start a new console generation when they are selling at such an impressive rate.

I have a 720p TV and rarely watch movies. Not in this thing's market. Without a 4K TV it seems pointless.

Then you would be wrong. You don't need a 4k TV to benefit from games being rendered at 4k.

Just remember, games are not Photo-realistic even at 720P.

^same deal, the reactions immediately following the release of the generation was the same noise when it was a theory. it was a massive pissing contest on which console had the biggest rims based on their stats on paper.

As for the 2nd question, who knows...but that didn't matter either, even ps4 failed to hit the promised 1080/60fps on some titles, all that mattered was if it was at least running the game slightly better than the other guy.
