Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Is the Scorpio next gen?

Bandorr said:
No. It has the exact same library as the Xbox one, and the Xbox one S.

No new games = not next gen.

PC be sad.

Well formally its mid-gen upgrade, but actually it very hard to tell any more, gens we know are now dead.

A ststem with a new library is new gen like the Switch. PS4 pro and Scorpio don't have that and are defenitly current gen by that logic.

Just from now "new library" thing will be less noticeable with every new console, especially because most likely we will have BC support and new consoles will use same but improved tech and architecture that are now available in XB1/PS4/Switch, and offcourse with meed gen upgrades.

I'm not quite as close minded as most here on when generations start and end and what consoles belong to which, but even I would argue that Scorpio is by no means a new generation above the XBONE.

A warrior keeps death on the mind from the moment of their first breath to the moment of their last.

So im guessing this puts an end to the typical "MS is a software company" since they just proved how good there design team really is.

In regard to the OP, capabilities isn't relfective to the generation. Wii, Wii U, and Switch are all considered next gen while having dated capabilities in the consoles realm.

Here's my prediction which could very well be wrong! X1 and Scorpio will be required to share games until a new Xbox One is released (perhaps 2021). From then on developers will be allowed to stop supporting the OG X1 if they desire while newer models will have to share games. That way each model gets atleast 8 years of notable support.

Generation has nothing to do with power increase. An increase in power is only typical due to processor updates over time.
A generation also doesn't require new software. Plenty of electronics, like Android and iOS have new generations of hardware without having different libraries of software.

What is a generation? It's simply when the primary hardware is replaced with new primary hardware. So, when iPhone 6S was replaced with iPhone 7, that was a new generation, when Wii U was replaced with Switch, new generation. What isn't a new generation? New 3DS, as it did not replace 3DS as the primary hardware.
The question is, is Scorpio replacing XBone as the primary hardware? If the answer is yes, then it is the next generation, if no,then it is not.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Gens for consoles are dead

Only when Nintendo and Sony say so.

A lot of discussion has gone on to try and define which generation the Nintendo Switch belongs to. There were more threads about the topic than needed even if it's a confusing topic.. Nintendo beats to it's own drum.

Sony also have released a mid generation upgrade.

While generations aren't dead, they're certainly changed forever.

They have all said so.

Microsoft certainly prefers next gen upgrade and take an early lead over PS5. Considering how much of a change in the hardware gets revealed, it'd confirm for final. This would also clearly link to how Xbox One has been performing in sales.

They messed up with the first xbox one, though.

The xbox one S, is better but still behinde the PS4 slim in terms of design (size(space usage, smart solutions),perf/price,ect)

This is the first console so far this gen, they have made where you go "thats really well done" (from a design point).

I think its too late to turn the generation around though. Sony likely has like a 30m+ lead currently.... you dont just take that sort of lead back easily. Also its probably going to be abit too pricey to have a huge effect on market (if it launches at 499$).
