Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Now that Yooka Laylee is essentially a critical failure... this is good time for Banjo Three!

One thing I'd like to ask anyone who has played the game:

If the vast array of technical issues that most reviews justifiably harped on were fixed, would this be a great game?

Generally when a game has that many technical hiccups I always feel I should check back in a month or two, as they can usually patch them up. I was seriously looking forward to this game, so I'm hoping that's it's still very much worth picking up once they (hopefully) are able to optimize it for the different hardware. Heck, it really is a perfect portable game, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise and I'll just wait until it's running on a Switch lol

I think the main takeaway from the reviews is the core gameplay itself isn't what turned critics off, I heard more complaints about the overall game. Such as technical issues, too long, bad camera, boring mini games, some bad level design, etc.

Frankly this isn't uncommon. I've played a lot of games over the years that were fun to a point and just get really boring for various reasons.

I don't buy the narative its too much like an N64 game to be enjoyable. It sounds like Yooka Laylee was overall just poorly designed.

Indeed. The problem doesn't seem to be the concept (people crowdfunded the crap out of it, after all), but the execution. 3D platforming can still be fun as hell, but there are many quality of life enhancements that we've come to expect from our games in the last 20 years that seem to have been ignored here. Even compared to its source by its own standards it's reportedly inferior in certain design elements.

If i was MS I would stay well away from them. They just failed to make a good game. MS failed to shift many XB1s with much better devs like insomniac and crystal dynamics. Some even failed to get their game done like platinum games. Hiring a B-tier indie dev will be a waste of time and I can't see MS doing it.

Critical Failure. Highly anticipated. By whom? the internet? Why do you think a game that is anticipated by some folk on the internet is going to score 90+?

HIghly anticipated by old Rare fans, they helped make the kickstarter a huge success.

The critics were primarily their old fans as well. So its not just random internet folk.

Many predicted KI would suck because of the studio working on it, a B-tier team... but that turned out pretty good.

I actually have more faith in Playtonic now. Why? Because there are good things about Yooka Laylee and they can learn from their failures in that game. Look at Uncharted 1, its not a great game. But the games after that showed ND learned from their mistakes.

Now the stuff I bolded, typical off the topic console war BS from you. With that logic MS shouldn't fund any game, don't bother talking to me with this crap.

I don't think a game that has flaws like Yooka Laylee is reflective of how people feel about this style of game as a whole.

I'm also under the illusion developers can learn what people enjoyed and did not.

I see what you mean. The Kickstarter was very successful so maybe the reception doesn't entirely reflect how people feel about the game. We'll see how things turn out soon enough.

But as far as I'm aware Playtonic is the only developer that attempted to revive the 90s platromer and there aren't that many developers that can capitalize on nostalgia like they can. So I don't see any developer out there that can even learn from Yooka Laylee's flaws let alone try to do same thing.

Well Playtonic was really attempting to create another Banjo game. I think all developers can learn Yooka Laylee, especially when many critics have the same gripes.

Again, I see Yooka Laylee as a proof of concept (they can really make this type of game) and they can learn from its failures. Essentially they are more prepared to make a good Banjo game then their were prior to Yooka Laylee.

The crowdfunders wanted it exactly the way it is, even if it doesn't meet the general public's taste. A little bit more polish here and there to further improve the game via patches and add aditional levels is expected and will follow.

If you do not love the highly acclaimed Banjo-Kazooie this is not a game for you and why should they change gameplay mechanics that so many people love. It was always clear that an independent developer cannot compete with Nintendo's standards of unlimited delays and manpower this is also the reason why Rare games got so bad after Nintendo sold the company to Microsoft.

After Shenmue 3, which will face exactly the same criticism, it would be the right time to crowdfund a classic round based Final Fantasy game with ATB gameplay. Because people like me prefer classic JRPGs, classic shooters, classic Zelda, and classic plattformers over modern games.

Quite opposite, of Yooka Laylee is critical great success, it would be perfect time for Banjo Three.

Just checked the scores and yea, it is pretty shit for all the hype its been getting. Other than Shovel Knight I can't name another amazing game from Kickstarter.
