Forums - Politics Discussion - Google's strangulating independent political media on Youtube

I always wondered how long it was gonna take for the corporate old media to be threatened by the new and free independent media and what they were gonna do to stop them. In this day and age, controlling TV channels and newspapers isn't enough to steer people's minds and opinions.

The war WSJ waged against PewDiePie blew up in their faces. An entire organization couldn't take a single independent youtuber down. So how do they escalate? where do they go from here?

YouTube and their advertisers have pulled the rug out from underneath news and politics channels. Revenue has completely imploded and any topic viewed as even mildly controversial or offensive is demonetized. It doesn't stop here, a new round of demonetization includes anything religion related, if you have the word "Athiest" in the title or a tag, chances are that video is gonna be demonetized. If you talk about ISIS, race issues, Israel and Saudi Arabia, if you speak against ISIS, all of those are considered controversial and your videos will be demonetized. So on and so forth.

If you are on youtube, your favorite content creators probably have already explained to you what's happening

Doesn't really matter what they do. You can't stop change. This is like the horse shoe makers who tried to go after the auto industry it's destined to fail. Just like the music industry going after Napster. We've seen this play out a million times and technology always wins. People are done with the TV news personality. Everyone talks exactly the same and no one is realistic at all. I don't know one person who acts/talks like a TV news personality.

So?

If people want to create that stuff there won't be anything stopping them from continuing to do so, they just won't be getting paid for it. I don't get the problem?

Quality, frequency and diversity will drop drastically. Not everyone on Youtube is a PewDewPie, there are lots of interesting, insightful and valuable channels out there that barely scrape by on ad revenue as is, or while simoultaniously holding a part- or even full time job, that will not be able to afford eqipment, software licensing etc. to keep up their standarts and release videos frequently. This is how you starve a platform of creativity and diversity.

Why do youtubers not deserve to be payed for their full time jobs like everyone else anyways? The Notion that a Youtuber does not deserve to be payed, regardless of how much effort and labor they put into their channel, because it should be their passion id like saying a game developer does not deserve to be payed for creating games because they happen to like their job.

Strangulating?

BUT FREE SPEECH! (For right wing, the forget corporatations are allowed to use money any way they want. that includes not paying individuals based on their cateria. Honestly youtube I applaud you for this.)

Well, I don't think this is going to stop Stephen Crowder, Paul Joseph Watson, Rebel Media, Sargon, Black Pigeon Speaks, Alex Jones, Varg Vikernes, Stefan Molyneux or Brother Nathanael from posting their views on YouTube.

So how are those people independent if they're dependent on ads?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Good thing stuff like Patreon, Bitcoin, and Paypal exist.

Because they're creating content that people aren't willing to pay for? Same as pretty much every profession you could possibly do. If people don't like the work you do they aren't going to want to pay you for it.

So they can A, earn their revenue a different way ie. directly from their audience, who unlike advertisers do like their content. B. Release their content on a different platform that has advertisers willing to pay for their content. Or C. Just accept that nobody is willing to pay for their content and either do something that people will pay for or just continue it as a hobby.

That's a big assumption to make, especially since a lot of creators DO finance themselves over the likes of Patreon. Also, if you have a show on youtube that pays well enough through advertisemets in the face of adblockers and decreased ad revenue you have demand. People pay you in views.

But some people might especially be drawn to the fact that youtube offers accessability for everyone with no pay walls attached simply because that kind of environment brees creativity. That does not mean they don't need money to survive. A lot of people also don't like the thought of 'e-begging' and 'milking their audience' (even though I personally don't neccissarily agree with that).

As for alternative platforms, there's none atm let's be honest.

And? If these people want to be paid for their political views, they can start up patreons, or, not be paid at all if it means that much to them. I don't blame corporations for wanting to steer shy of the bullshit and not foot the bill for it. If you want to get paid with ads, you need to come up with a game plan to steer back toward neutral content.
