Forums - PC Discussion - My friend's computer broke and mine sucks! Help us figure out laptops. ($600-$900)

So my  friend is in more need then me, but we both certainly need new computers. We are both looking for laptops. I am no expert, and I might buy directly again.

I bought this 8 years ago for $900: https://www.amazon.com/G73SW-A1-17-3-Inch-i7-2630QM-Processor-SO-DIMM/dp/B004I1J864

But now it is having major problems, I can't even play Crusader Kings 2 anymore.

Now I look at a laptop like this: https://www.amazon.com/i5-6300HQ-keyboard-Microsoft-signature-Anti-Glare/dp/B01LXCBXQO/ref=pd_lpo_147_tr_t_3/166-7076094-2072220?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=7NQZVG6J51PEN5922YTX

It looks pretty decent, but the processor seems kind of slow and less screen size plus middle pack GPU.

What are your thoughts for laptops?

They are not good for gaming.

Expect that to read several times in this thread.

Already expected, but I been gaming 8 years on mine so I don't really care. Lasted longer then my desktop.

Just try to get something with a Geforce 1050. That GPU is pretty decent for gaming and miles ahead of its predecessors or anything AMD has to offer in mobile GPUs. It could be difficult to find such a device for 900 $, but not impossible. It's definitely worth it. The 1050 packs about 1.8 Teraflops, so just about the same as the PS4, while its predecessor the 950m only has 1.2 Teraflops. You should be able to play just about any game available right now at 1080p with a mix from mid to high settings on a 1050.

I definitely feel like I can slouch on HDD to save on costs, would that be a mistake? I have no qualms deleting stuff, because I rarely replay games that I finish.

I only used a laptop for pc gaming (well, I don't have much time to play anymore but when I do it's on a laptop.

960m is a waste of budget, not significant boost in performance over the 950m and not much cheaper than the 970m (My current GPU).

SSD size barely matters. I will never be enough for everything you want on it so just grab a cheap external hard drive, and put your current game and os only on the SSD.

As always stay away from I7 cpus, they are only good to show off your e-penis as multi core performance does not matter in gaming.

Try finding one with DDR4 ram. Even if it's only 4-8 GBS. You cna upgrade it for cheap whenever.

Matte screen is abjectively better now that the color range is acceptable on both matte and glossy panels.

Just to say. Geforce 960M is pretty much equal to GTX 1050

Yeah... totally...

Geforce 1050 even surpasses the Desktops 960. It's a pretty decent mobile chip.
