Forums - General Discussion - My Girlfriend And I Were Accused Of Being Racists At A Library

So me and my girlfriend go to this library near where we live fairly often, maybe 3-5 times a week. We tend to study, read, or do research here. Wellll... today was a bit odd for us:

So we're in the back of the library minding our own business. My girlfriend is doing some homework and I'm reading a book on the history of various religions (Shut up, I love history) -nothing out of the ordinary. It was quiet and occasionally we'd say something to each other or whatnot.

30 minutes after we've been doing our thing a black woman comes by. From what I'd guess, she was only marginally older than us, perhaps 22-24yrs old. She was of a heavier build and had a large backpack. Her being around wasn't a surprise since a lot of college students come to the section of the library we were located for looking at historical texts and she appeared to be a college student.

I didn't pay much attention to her nor did my girlfriend, we were busy with our own affairs. The girl was looking through old magazines on display. Well, when she got near us she suddenly blurted out, "One of ya'll move." There was anger in her voice. I moved, and gave a look to my girlfriend, we were both kind of caught off guard by her abrupt rudeness. She then stumbled and had a magazine stand fall down, hitting my leg. I hand it to her, she goes, "Thanks" and I go, "Yeah" still annoyed by her previous comment. She left at which point my gf and I laugh for how odd it was. It wasn't a loud or anything, maybe more of a scoff.

But we thought that was the end of it. We were wrong...

5 minutes later a librarian comes up to us and goes, "Excuse me, I was informed that you two may have used some racial slurs against a young lady. I want to tell you that it is agai-" I cut her off and go, "What are you talking about? We didn't say anything to anyone." She looks at us weird and she goes, "Well, I don't know for certain if it was you two. But a young lady was very upset saying two people were saying racist things against her. Calling her the N word, for example. You two are the only couple, only people, where she said this happened." There was no mistake, the librarian was right -we were the only people in this part of the library. That girl lied about us for literally no reason and accussed us of racism. We explained what happened to the librarian who seemed to side with us after we said our part. But that infuriates me to no end we were randomly accussed of something as disgusting as that.

Btw me and my gf are both mix race just to make it funnier. I'm white/Latino (with 1/8th black, but I'm pale af so we know that didn't pass along far XD) and my gf is white/Asian (shes 1/16th Latina as well)

Reminds me a teacher that once snapped on me out of the blue saying she would show me her degree if I wanted proof she had one, when I wasn't even talking, or looking her way, lol.

Anyway, gladly it was just a minor stuff, if she wanted she could have caused you two some actual problems and embarassment, but it was just a hit and run liar, if what you said was all that happened.

Yeah that's all that happened XD I'm glad thats all it was too. Couldve been worse like you said

You're guilty of being white. Case closed.

You should file a lawsuit against the librarian. Or at least get a lawyer to write a letter of complaint. Being accused of racism can seriously affect your future.

Great story and thanks for sharing! The problem is in society we just have very rude ignorant people where race has absolutely nothing to do with their character at all, its just how and who they are in life...

The sad thing is that many people who don't know many African Americans or other ethnic people might use an experience like this to mold every future decision of what they think or feel about ethnic people.

Welcome to the dark side of political correctness...

Some people will use whatever leverage they can get. It sounded like she just wanted to cause problems for you, perhaps because she is racist herself. My mom would call it "spite work". My sister is bi-polar and very self-absorbed and would often "get back" at people for slights both real and imagined, so I know it well.

Before the nuts come in rambling about white persecution or whatever, just realize some people simply grow up to be rude.

Also, I am glad to see the librarian respectfully confronted you. No insults or anything.

It reminds me of when one of my classmates years ago was resting his head on his hand, and he got in trouble because the teacher mistook it for something offensive. Obviously situations like this should not happen, but I know that this could be used to discredit all anti-racist movements.
