Forums - Gaming Discussion - How the heck did Sony manage to retake the console market again?

Mostly just the other two companies fucking up.

Microsoft managed to release a console that was weaker and $100 more expensive. Almost anything would win against that.

I don't think it's really that the others screwed up. The others weren't doing anything other than what was expected. Sony goes above and beyond. They never limit themselves and none their ventures have ever aimed to overshadow their core consolewhich they've remained true to for over twenty years. Microsoft doesn't have the world draw that Sony has and never has.

Actually Sony is pretty much always doing what is expected. Their consoles don't really change that much besides extra hardware power and what kind of format it plays (CD, DVD, Blu-ray). They're by the number consoles, and you can tell by their names: PS1, 2, 3 & 4.

And I'm not saying that's a bad thing for the record, but saying Sony goes above and beyond makes no sense.

Oh and the PS3 released for $600 just because Sony wanted to push blu-rays... If that's not comprimising your core market then I don't know what is. Without the PS brand they'd have died then and there. If MS or Nintendo ever tried doing something like that they'd lose big time. From a hardware and price point perspective the GC was much better designed than the PS3 yet it barely sold over 20 million units (relative to the time period both consoles released in).

I first expounded on why the price difference was an issue before the mentioning of any mathematical difference.  And you and anyone else has the right to disagree, but you kept skirting my question.  Either you just didn't know or answering it would not have put Microsoft is such a favorable light.  At least my reasoning were based from facts and history (EVERY Xbox One unit bundled with Kinect at launch - no other option, Microsoft claiming Kinect was "essential" - lies, Kinect unbundled and overcharged - cost more to the consumer when buying both a standalone Kinect and standalone Xbox One, multiplatform games running better on the PS4 over the Xbox One - better value on PS4 for game performance, etc.)

Yet again you just do it again. You are talking about puting Microsoft in bad or good light when this is not about it. You have this agenda, I do not. And you are right about one thing, I'm not interrested into having this disucssion. I responded to this thread to talk about why, in my oppinion, Sony got the best start this generation not to start a rent or arguing about how you believe Microsoft methods and marketing are lies, bulshitt and how much your Play Station Four is a better value for you and blah blah.

My anwser was super simple and you can argue with me that consumers did not only care about the price but also about something else in Sony's offering (and it would be on topic) ... But no, instead you are arguing with me and try to tell me how much you think Microsoft is lying, bullshiting, offering lower values, all of this subjective things this thread is NOT about.

As over half the contributors of this thread have said in layman's terms, "Microsoft fucked up" as part fof the reason why Sony has done so well this gen  So it's not just me, and at least I've backed myself up with FACTS.  Just because my opinions and assessment are back by facts that don't favor Microsoft (and that's NATURALLY so since it is what it is), doesn't mean there's an agenda.  Or ir could mean that your agenda is to downplay both Sony's success and Microsoft's failures in this current gen of consoles.

Brand power. MS & Nintendo making mistakes did help, but honestly, it just made the inevitable happen much sooner.

Uncharted 3, The Last of Us, Ni no Kuni, Tales of Xillia, Kingdom Hearts, etc

Or

Gears of Call of Halo 19 1/2

Tough choice.

It's really a tough choice if you don't give a crap about JRPGs, then your list is just a bunch of shooters.

Like Demon's Souls, Ratchet, Sly 4, LBP, MGS4, God of War, Heavy Rain, Motorstorm, inFamous, Journey, Warhawk, Modnation Racers, Yakuza, Twisted Metal, Heavenly Sword, Flower, Afrika, Gran Turismo, that one Japan Studio puppet platformer

The games I just summed up are all very different to each other, no other console in that gen has this much variety! And I left out all the shooters and jrpgs!

PS3 smoked the competition exclusive wise just like its predecessors before it and this gen history is repeating itself before our very eyes. Only this time PS4 is not smoking the competition but abusing them, it's really ugly. The word Xbox seems to have disappeared among gaming media and general gamer talk these past few months and the only thing that reminds us of them is a passing rumor of "da Scorpio".

How does Sony win 4 gens in a row??! Should be a Guiness World Records or something. "Longest winning streak in console generations"

lol the bold and upper cases makes your points so factuals :) You did not back anything up with any facts just assumptions and assesments of your own (and yes, probably the same for the majority of Sony enthusiasts). As a Xbox One owner I disagree with everything you say about the values of the Xbox One etc.. And obviously this is normal...

My "agenda" is to say what I said 10 times already. Sony did the right choice with their pricing point, Microsoft did not. Simple as that, now go on with all your extrapolations if it makes you feel good.
Your agenda is to bitch Microsoft at any opportunity you have while responding to me...

You mean the ones I just mentioned which you chosse to ignore and deny:

"At least my reasoning were based from facts and history (EVERY Xbox One unit bundled with Kinect at launch - no other option, Microsoft claiming Kinect was "essential" - lies, Kinect unbundled and overcharged - cost more to the consumer when buying both a standalone Kinect and standalone Xbox One, multiplatform games running better on the PS4 over the Xbox One - better value on PS4 for game performance, etc.)"

^^^^^^FACTS

Dude, please have fun with your "FACTS/ASSUMPTIONS/BELIEVES/HOPES/WISHES" and enjoy yourself. I'm here to talk about the Play Station Four and the topic not your hate towards Microsoft and the Xbox One. Have a nice evening.

LOL Turkish..... none of those games you posted were on his list. It was mostly a joke... he's made two shitposts in the thread about variety yet listed two genres. No need to take it so seriously as list off a bunch of PS4 games. I own a PS4 :) I know it has genres outside of shooters and JRPGs.

Nintendo stumbled over themselves the entire Wii U duration, losing a LOT of their Wii momentum. And meanwhile, Microsoft made the Xbox "One".

You do the math.

I love this thread. Too entertaining....

Now to give my opinion. It was a mixture of everything that has PS4 winning. Even in the beginning. Funny to see some folks say that it was purely because MS and Nintendo "f'ed up" like Sony was never a contender. I do agree that SOME of the success was due to the mess ups. Just like MS lead the charge in the US last gen due to Sony's launch screw up and Nintendo running out of steam so early in that gen.
