Forums - Gaming Discussion - How the heck did Sony manage to retake the console market again?

Mostly just the other two companies fucking up.
Microsoft managed to release a console that was weaker and $100 more expensive. Almost anything would win against that.

So, why did the 360 lose to a console that seemed weaker in the beginning, due to multiplats not being on par, and was $200 more expensive for 3 years?

Yeah, this is the cognitive dissonance resulting from when base assumptions about 360/PS3 are wrong. Nothing mysterious about it,
360 fans are disproportionately going to live in regions where 360 WAS dominant and thus have very different personal experience.
Yet the experience seen in those regions does not correlate to the overall global picture, and Sony had and has stronger global brand.
Had MS not goofed with PR, pricing, and design this gen, it's plausible they could be doing better in their core market (US/UK/AU).
Given Sony outsold MS globally with "DISASTER" PS3, it is EXPECTED a mere "EQUAL" offering would yield even larger global lead.
It's not even about that being "fair" or whatever to MS, that is just the reality of things.

Actually yes, Insomniac is a 2nd party partner this gen. They partnered together for a game Microsoft funded and published, called Sunset Overdrive. It's a great game, thus they have been a great partner for MS this gen. But do feel free to reply a third time reminding us that Sony could have had the game first if they didn't demand the IP, or that Insomniac still makes games for Sony. Again, none of that changes anything I said. Is it possible for you to reply on this matter with something that doesn't come off as PR for Sony? Who cares about Ratchet or SpiderMan, lol.

I'll give you an example of a second party. Second party is a dedicated independent developer that runs outside of a first party brand but it's published and works on ips exclusively for said company by contract . For Microsoft this is Remedy studios. Insomniac has made exclusives for Sony since the ps2 era and they still are. In the case of a contract to be made with microsoft to be considered second party Microsoft would have to own the ip. The work was done through third party publishing. Sony has plenty of games so really they could afford to lose it. Sony builds high profile ips every gen. That and just how they do business with gaming. You win some and you lose some. Another example of third party publishing was when Microsoft published mass effect to come to console exclusively alongside PC. Who care about ratchet and Spider-Man? Those are called examples of insomniacs loyalty to Sony as a second party developer. Again... this is the same relationship Microsoft has with Remedy and they own the ip to remedys last game. mistwalker has worked second party for Nintendo and ms. This is how it works. Gears of war was a third party exclusive until Microsoft purchased the ip. Now all the games are first party.

I read the first sentence of that and ignored the rest. A developer who makes a game funded by a platform holder is a 2nd party developer. Insomniac has been both a 2nd and 3rd party developer for MS and Sony this gen :)

Its simple

The Playstation is more popular in overseas markets and it has legs.

Absoluttelly, they pulled a Robert Downey Jr. on everyone.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

The ip is not owned by ms therefore it is third party. To be third party said game must be contractually commissioned.

Does Sony own the Call of Duty IP? Because they published it in Japan and call that second party. With Sunset were not even talking about just publishing, it was entirely funded by Microsoft. It's a second party game. Or maybe you know more about these deals than Yoshida?

Cod is third party for Sony. Sunset overdrive was not commissioned by Microsoft. Microsoft paid for it because they needed exclusives. Insomniac just needed a publisher after Sony refused to do it. That's all.

So you know more about the deal than Yoshida, understood. LOL

I don't know more about any deal that yoshida had nor would I presume to know more than him in general. I do  know what third, second and first party are though. Insomniac was shopping for a publisher after Sony refused to do it.pretty simple to understand, I think. The game was not commissioned. To be second party the ip must be commissioned solely for a first party.

So you're saying Yoshida has no idea what third, second and first party are. Interesting. Wonder how he has a job.
