LOL @ Wasteland 2 an indie. Also, it's not exclusive. It's on Xbone and PS4. Where it retails for $40. Ignoring the amount of content and work that goes into a game because it is scalable and can be played on older hardware and labeling it an indie as such is just nonsense. And PC gaming is chock full of games like that which unlike Wasteland 2, will never come to consoles.

If your criteria for exclusive is "can be played on one platform and not the other" then why'd you even list PC and leave Xbox out?

2014: 5 exclusives 80+, I guess all but Kalimba would "count" for you.
2015: 5 exclusives 80+, all "AAA", not counting Tomb Raider since it's no longer exclusive.
2016: 5 exclusives 80+, all "AAA" but FRU, which was a fuck awesome Kinect title.
2017: 1 so far, would be 2 but Halo Wars 2 is at 79.

So it's strange to see you say "Microsoft has given up on exclusives" as if they have zero but going by your own definition, the Xbox would outclass the PC in exclusives that matter. Equally weird is you dismiss Microsoft as having given up on exclusives and yet all 11 of those exclusives that by your definition count are games they developed or published where as with the PS4 list 11 of those 19 titles are either made or developed by Sony, the rest are de facto standard Japanese exclusives Sony had nothing to do with or weird exclusives that shouldn't be on the list like uh, Arkham Knight. So 11 exclusives that matter by your definition from both Microsoft and Sony and yet Microsoft has given up on exclusives and Sony is doing a phenomenal job with them. Makes sense.

edit, my math was off, it's actually 14 exclusives that count by your definition from "given up on exclusives" Microsoft versus 11 from Sony. lol. I'm just gonna bow out of this thread.

Wasteland 2 was funded by Kickstarter. How could you possibly think it's not an indie title? I left Xbox out because it is generally agreed on these forums that MS doesn't have many exclusives. But here's a list for you...

2016
Forza Horizon 3
Gears of War 4

2015
Forza 6
Ori and the Blind Forest
Halo 5

2014
Forza Horizon 2
Titanfall
Sunset Overdrive

That's every AAA XB1 game rated 80% or higher that you can't play on PS4 from 2014 to 2017. I even threw Ori and the Blind Forest in there for good measure.

Now let's do a list of high rated XB1 games that can't be played on PC from 2014 to 2017...

2016
Forza Horizon 3
Final Fantasy XV

2015
Forza 6
Halo 5

2014
Forza Horizon 2
Sunset Overdrive
Arkham Knight

If not for the yearly release of a new Forza game, XB1 would have 5 exclusives vs PS4, and 4 exclusives vs PC.

Back on topic though. PS4 has been successful because it has a wide range of quality titles that sets it apart from its competition. If you look at the libraries of the DS, 3DS, and PS2 we can see a pattern emerge. Lots of good games that noone else has, and plenty of variety to please every one.

Your comparison with Nokia is apples to oranges. The phone industry went through a seismic, revolutionary shift when the iPhone came around, and Nokia, a traditional cell phone producer, was left behind. The console industry hasn't gone through any such major change since it's inception. All advancements have been gradual and evolutionary. Sony was never "left behind," they simply made very poor business decisions which they were able to rectify and learn from at the start of the new cycle. Didn't hurt that MS and Ninty screwed up royally as well.

The fact Sony got rid of most of PS3's critiscism (except the CELL architecture obviously) during the PS3 lifespan has a lot to do with it.
If you look at 360 and Wii last few years on the market, 360 mostly had Kinect exclusives and multiplats and Wii had some shovelware every other month, while PS3 had quite a few highly rated exclusives.
They also introduced the biggest features of the competition mid gen, namely motion gaming and a more stable PSN.
Thus when the PS4 came out, the level of satisfaction with the PS3 was higher than the one of the Wii and 360.

Fact is that Sony never had "catastrophe" or failed console, yes PS3 sold less than PS2 and Wii, but still was pretty successful console with sold 85-90m units, not some kind of Wii U faile like OP sounds.

IMO its much more interesting how Nintendo after GC won last gen, how MS after original Xbox made very successful Xbox360, or how Nintendo totally failed with Wii U after their biggest success with Wii.

Sony does what nintendont and Microsoft never could. Sony is the only brand that excels in first, second and third party offerings simultaneously. their offerings are larger and more eclectic gamers who enjoy tastes from the east and west. Microsoft has passable first party but good third party and an amazing online system. Nintendo has the opposite where they make Amazing games and lack the proper os and third party. Sony has everything they all have that's good.

This. Nintendo didn't really try. MS stumbled... before proceeding to fall over, bum up...

More like "Walked out on stage and began to dismember itself, inch by inch, with a hacksaw".

It's not that bad... Also, exclusives genuinely do not matter *cough**cough*Wii U...

Games. It helps when you aren't cancelling everything that isn't Halo, Gears of War, and Call of Duty.

Seems gamers want classical genres, indie, retro, and Japanese games again.  Western military versus shooters may have finally run their course. Even NFL is facing declining audiences in the US. Hopefully the sun has set on the western dude bro gamer demographic dominating and dictating the game market.

Nintendo and Sony were never really competitors (most all who have one have the other) and Microsoft let their greed and narrow demographic pandering show too much.

Especially this. PS3 wasn't extraordinary unpopular and PS4 isn't extraordinary popular. PS4 is just selling better because the concurrention is a lot weaker.

Concurrention?

do you mean competition?

I do. For some reason I thought 'concurrention' was an English word.

Usually when businesses lose their glory they never go back and redeem themselves the same way. Nokia phones are one example, they were so huge in the 90s and ever since the introduction of smart phones they are almost forgotten now.  Sony managed to dominate the home console market ever since the 90s up until about 2006-07. We can all probably agree that the PS3 was a major blow to Sony; after being so successful with PS1 and especially with the PS2 now Sony was losing big portions of the market to Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. Sony did invest in quality first person exclusive games for PS3, which helped them a lot, but I must admit that I was almost certain that future Sony consoles (if there was any) would never live up to PS2's glory days. On the other hand I was certain that Microsoft would capitalize on the success they had with the 360 and they would at least maintain their strongholds in NA and Europe.. However we all know how things turned out.. PS4 is now dominating the console market again they are outselling Xbox 1 both in NA (its main stronghold), Europe and Japan.

Now, we can all give many reasons as to HOW Sony managed to come back from catastrophe and lead to success again..   But what do you think are the top reasons this happened.

Sorry mate, but when I read the last 2 lines, I stopped to take seriously your Topic. Did you call PS3 Era a catastrophe I mean, Sony won in Europe with PS3, came second in the Global at the end, delivered some of the best exclusive games, and you called this a catastrophe ?  Am I reading right ?  Maybe you can call WiiU half a catastrophe, but you can't with PS3 or X1, for example.
