Forums - Nintendo Discussion - GameStop: Nintendo Switch is Selling Out “Within Hours”; Demand “Incredibly Strong”

I was skeptical about using it as a handheld before buying it, but now I love it. I just got back from the car dealership to get my car checked out. I had to 'wait' an hour, that was way too short, still plenty battery left! The guy at the service counter was trying to get one too 'for his kids'. Demand will only get stronger when more are seen outside.

This one more important thing that Wii U didnt had, point that consumers also marketing Switch when they are using it outside home. I saw few more similar anecdotal cases, for instance where people bring their Switch at work and people like it so much that they decided to buy it also.

the wii u thing might happen to the switch. sell 3 million units real quick...then struggle to hit 10 million and slowly hit 20 near the end.

good luck ninty!!!!!

Few huge differences, it's very obvious that Switch is much better product/appealing than Wii U was, its very obvious that Switch has huge system seller on launch when Wii U didnt had one, it's very obvious that marketing is miles better than Wii Us, and for now Switch seems much more popular than Wii U was at launch.

Switch will easily sell lot more than Wii U did.

More meaningless anecdotal evidence:

I bought a Switch at launch and I didn't even know that the Wii U existed until probably a few months after it's launch.

The marketing is leaps and bounds above what they did with the Wii U. The message about what this thing is and what it does is crystal clear.

havn't seen an ad yet on tv. just stuf on the net from youtube tech reveiwers which is not nintendo.

and here.

so i think the marketing is on par with the wii U>

Marketing for Switch is totally different compared to Wii Us, Switch marketing itself is pretty strong (Super Bowl commercial) and massage is very clear, for Wii U you had lots a people who didnt know that Wii U exist at all while other thought that Wii U was some kind addon for Wii.

Wasn't the Wii's first month or so kind of weak anyways? Going back to the holiday 2006 charts, it seems to have only done around 500k weekly, so I'm thinking beating the Wii might not be the huge accomplishment everyone's saying it is. It looks like the main strength of the Wii is that sales didn't drop very much after the holiday season, so we'll have to wait and see. Granted, the Switch launched during a non-holiday period and numbers are still good, so maybe it evens out.

Gamestop is in trouble, so obviously they're having "a dramatic lift in traffic in-store" and talk about it even more than Nintendo themselves. "Game stores are still relevant! ". Everything is selling amazingly according to them, Switch, PSVR, even Scorpio...

LOL, yes, in their current situation, every gaming novelty thrills them with both happiness and fear.

oh wow. i didnt know! i skipped the superbowl because i was abroad.

I would say you missed a good one. But it was a blowout until the fourth quarter so I'm not sure that's entirely accurate.

I know I'm replying to this super late, but I have to say there is NO way you can compare Nintendo's marketing approach with the Switch to how they handled the Wii U.  I remember not seeing any ads for Wii U until like a year into it's release, and even then only on like the Cartoon Network where kids would see it more than adults.  Compare that to the Switch where Nintendo paid for an ad to run during the Super Bowl for the first time in the company's history.  Super Bowl LI was watched by 111+ million people.  Ads are currently run frequently on TV, and as someone else mentioned even in movie theaters.  I just saw a Switch advertisement play at my local theater before Kong: Skull Island this week in fact.  Nintendo is making a tremendous effort to market the Switch.  It is most certainly not "on par" with Wii U.

No way you were able to type that with a straight face when they literally had a Superbowl Ad for this thing. The Wii U marketing is no where near comparable to how great the Switch marketing has been, I personally didn't know the Wii U existed until 2014 around Mario Kart 8's release and then got one that holiday.

Gamestop might be telling the truth. and reading some comments on the thread. Nintendo really stepped up their game in their marketing department. There are more ads for Switch than WiiU on its equivalent year.
Switch ads, I saw in Nick and Nick JR when I've even use my Roku. Switch ads which is shown before I select an episode in Nick. On top of the normal ads I saw on normal TV programming ads.
Even on youtube, I saw Switch ads.

I just hate it that I can't get a Switch. Will wait for MK8 deluxe or like what I've previously stated, by holidays or within a year.

Wii U didn't hit 20M, tho

i know....im being optamistic that it will surpass the wii u by 7 million units.

Wouldn't you be stupid otherwise?  If they go down to one system to make games for do you think they will suffer the software droughts they incurred last generation?  Your estimates are far too low and this is from someone that has no interest in the system yet.  Tis a shame they can't get a NES software launch lineup but the games are coming.  I'll have to wait a year or two for them myself.

Yeah, the keyword being IF...

Based on gamestop comments this is the fastest selling system ever. We'll know when Nintendo releases numbers.
