Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Yooka-Laylee will see a Switch release “as soon as possible”, Playtonic wants to focus on developing own IP

Playtonic’s Andy Robinson, the writer and comms director for the studio, recently answered some questions about Yooka-Laylee during an interview with Game Reactor. Some of the topics covered include the release of the game on the Switch eShop and whether or not Playtonic would be interesting in creating games with already established characters, such as Banjo-Kazooie or Donkey Kong.

On the Switch release for Yooka-Laylee:

“It’s a bit too early to go into specifics with this version, but rest assured we’re working directly with Nintendo to get it out as soon as possible for our many fans and Kickstarter backers on that platform. We’re big Nintendo fans here, so it’s very exciting to be working on Nintendo Switch.”

On how Playtonic would feel about developing a game for older, legendary characters like Banjo-Kazooie:

“The most important thing for the team at Playtonic is that we maintain the autonomy and culture that allows us to create the kind of games we want to make. When working with another company’s IP, you inherently lose some of that independence, so right now we’re focusing on expanding the Playtonic Universe of stories across many different game genres.”

With an answer like that, one has to be curious as to what Playtonic has planned for the future of their universe. You can read the full interview here.

Just...just shut up, Playtonic. Just shut. up. Don't even bother speaking until there's a release date. And for a physical version. I'm sick of hearing how big fans you are of Nintendo, how much you value Nintendo customers. I'm sick of the PR two step BS. Just shut up and do what you said you would. Don't say you care, PROVE you care.

I'm sure it at least won't end up like Project Cars, but still, Playtonic is doing some dumb things as of late. Also, saying that they are big Nintendo fans is not something isolated, almost every dev nowadays says it and then very few actually bring their work to their systems.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

It better release soon, and we need physical release to bolster those shelves...... but yeah yooka laylee is my next switch purchase ( assuming it comes out before MK8)

I'll definitely pick this up on the switch. Just feels right playing a banjo succesor title on a Nintendo platform again once again (From ex-rare guys).

Nintendo version is the only version being developed by Playtonic. Every other version is Team 17 so that's something.

I dislike them a lot. After that whole fiasco with them I don't really trust them. If they release a physical edition, I'll be buying used. If not, oh well. I'll miss out on a good game most likely. I can live with that though.

Which makes it more BS that they only figured out 4 months before release (and after the Switch was revealed fully) that the Wii U couldn't handle the game. Don't get me wrong, I would rather have it on the Switch, but it "not being able to run" on the Wii U is BS. They Cancelled because of the Switch. Which is what they should have said.

Agreed. Wii U was treated like the red headed step child.

It's all BS my friends.  Either way.  Cause option one, it really did have some mysterious technical issue on Wii U.  They would have known that months and months prior and lied straight to our faces.  Option 2, the game could run and canceling it was a business move and they are lying now.  Oh and in the Nindie showcase, Team 17 were revealed to be the developers of the Switch version which means the "Playtonic is personally seeing to the Wii U/Nintendo version" was bollocks too.
