Forums - Gaming Discussion - Does Witcher 3 ever get good?

I'm surprised to see so many people writing "Yeah, it's an okay game, but not as great as everyone says," because all I've seen since it came out is how amazing it is. I'm in the same boat as the OP; I heard it was good, tried it, and don't really like playing it all that much. The art style and lore seem really good, but actually playing the game felt clunky and I wasn't having any fun at all. I really wanted to like it, too. :/

So, you hated the first two. But still played this one...And are even getting a decent way INTO it...AND complaining that sucks?

Sounds like you're enjoying them all to me :)

You sound REALLY picky.

Funny for a guy with the Trico trilogy for an avatar.

I felt exactly the same about Skyrim, dropped it after a few hours.

Yeah, I find it strange when Skyrim and Fallout fans complain about TW3's combat. Skyrim has a really unsatisfactory and simplified combat system, so does the Fallout games from Bethesda.

You're right, popehead!

It's true that Skyrim's melee combat is kind of nothing, just a means to the end of exploration, but it's also not the only way to play the game.  I play stealth, bows, summoning magic, and destruction magic all before straight melee.  I disagree with you about Fallout, though, especially Fallout 4, which I find very enjoyable in terms of combat, especially with the increased lethality of survival or a mod that lets you select increased damage.

Fallout is also very different from the Witcher in terms of combat focus so I don't understand why you'd find that strange.  Playing rifles or pistols is nothing like Witcher at all, to the point that a combat comparison makes little sense.  Unless you're talking about Fallout melee?  That's a style I don't care anything about, though, and it's obviously not the only path.

its one of the greatest games of all time. I have over 300+ hours on it and want more! Im in heaven when im on it!

btw i read 6 out of the 7 novels.

and i think the fighting is well balanced and methodical. theres a certain art to it and feels very good once you get it down. imust admit it took hours and hours to get used to it. and to not die always. its a steep learning curve. by the end of the game i was dancing around enemies and whirl winding like a god.

yeah I sold it without ever approaching the end. From degenerating equipment to a stilted world I just wasn't feeling it. I just didn't care for the story and the combat was boring to me.

Stealth and bow in Skyrim is broken, way, way, way overpowered and then some, it takes the fun out of it once you reach a certain level. Magic is kinda fun though. Melee is mostly useless without a bunch of mods.

The Fallout combat is so weightless and dull, and the VATS system is a complete copout to score cheap criticals (I never use it though). Weapons have such little feel in Fallout, it's a lot better in games like Far Cry 3, for instance. I don't know why, but all the Bethesda games since Daggerfall have left me wanting something better, especially ever since other developers stepped up their game (literally) and produced combat with a lot more depth and feel. Fallout also benefits from mods, but that's sort of unfair, if your games need user generated mods to function and yield depth, you're doing something wrong. Don't get me wrong, I really like Skyrim, but the combat is kinda lame, all in all. Fallout 4 never sat so well with me, it just feels like too small a step further and the base-building is hopeless and the scrapping and crafting becomes a chore rather than something enjoyable. Let's not forget the hopeless story and narration that Bethesda have gotten (in)famous for.

Yeah, comparing TW3 to Fallout is maybe a little weird, but I was talking about poorly implemented combat in open world games and found the comparison relevant for that reason. I enjoy the combat in TW3, unlike the two first games, the first one was especially bad and the second one allowed for so little creativity. TW3 needs to be played on the hardest difficulty though, but at least the combat in the vanilla edition does its job, it doesn't need a bunch of mods to make me happy, unlike Skyrim and Fallout.

No..i just really like gaming (RPGs being one of the main attractions) so i end up playing many things "cause you never know". And I also finish mediocre games as long as they're not too big.

This was actually my 4th attempt at the franchise, not third, because I played Witcher 2 twice, did the two different routes (with about 1-2 years apart between playthroughs). And yep all the way to the end. Doesn't mean i enjoyed it. It just wasn't so bad that I couldn't stomach it. With this one it's more a problem of time/quantity than anything else, the lackluster enjoyment can't justify the investment the game asks of me.. Witcher 2 was actually kinda short when you think about it, first time cleared it in ~20hours. So it was "bearable". W3 doesn't really feel bearable

The story and the world is what carries the game, the combat has always been ass, its part of the charm imo. Also they quests are a lot better than basically any other RPG. Even though they can be boring at times its no way near the level of Fallout etc.

I didn't like 1, 2 was meh, but this game won me over about 5 hours in, i easily have over 100 hours logged in this game, that said, its not my GOTY 2015, that goes to Bloodborne, but im am probably the biggest souls fan on this forum.
