Forums - Gaming Discussion - Does Witcher 3 ever get good?

I haven't played it, to be honest. Fool me once, fool me twice, I'll buy the third game for $10 if I have nothing else to play.

A bunch of people were hyping the first one up so I was pretty excited for it. I didn't get very far before quitting, however, because the combat was legitimately awful and the character models were somehow creepy. I bought the second one because people said it was much improved but I couldn't get into it. It felt really pretentious and I was lost because I didn't finish the first one.

One of my favorite RPG games probably ever. I really took my time beating the main quest. I still need to finish the DLC. What I would recommend is keep going with it. It took me awhile before it clicked, and realized how great the game was. I really enjoyed the Witcher 2 so I was familiar with the world before hand, which helped.

W3 is overrated IMHO.

I'll admit the beginning is slow and not at all to my tastes... I'm very much in favor of either creating my own character or having a rather bland/blank slate character and being let loose on the world, but the story can feel a tad restrictive initially (especially if you don't know the character).

But yes, it gets much better after not too long. It's certainly not my favorite (I definitely prefer Bethesda's open world games), but it's huge and full of fun detail so exploring it is quite fulfilling.

- Combat, as I expected, still sucks. Even many fans of the game have admitted this so it came as no surprise. Not a particular let down. It's too simple, wonky/unresponsive, enemies are still overly erratic, making the whole thing a mess. Like playing drums with no rythm. 3 games in and the only "valuable" improvement they've made is flashy death animations. Unbelievable.

I made the mistake of starting W3 immediately after Bloodborne. And i think that shock had a lasting effect.

Hunting Season is done...

It took me a looooong time to get into it. But you've already done and the Barron's quest and it had me hooked by then so I reckon you're boned.

The most fun I had with W3 was the second playthrough on Death March. The meh combat all of a sudden became awesome.

I haven't played the game but a close friend of mine did. He had the exact same criticisms as you. The combat is apparently very dull and so are the missions. He ended up dropping it like a sack of potatoes and couldn't understand why it got so much critical acclaim.

Eh, some games just don't mesh with certain people. Considering you didn't like the first two Witcher games, OP, maybe the setting and gameplay just aren't what you want. The rest of the game is more enjoyable, but it isn't significantly different from the beginning either, as the quests remain ask A to see B and I before E except after C, and though you learn more moves, the combat doesn't suddenly become Ninja Gaiden. You might want to just put it aside for something else rather than forcing yourself to play something that isn't clicking with you.

It's a love it or hate it thing with the witcher. I too tried to like it. I played the first one but just couldn't enjoy it. Skipped the second game, tried the third game again, still hadn't any fun. It's just boring to me and the gameplay is quite dull. Plus I bought at launch and it was a buggy mess. I had to restart my whole game once because Geralt didn't want to climb a ladder.

But yeah, others enjoy it very much, just like I enjoy games other people hate to death. So I wouldn't call it a genuinely bad game. It's just not for me and apparently also not for you. Just let it go and play something else.

Fair enough, sounds about right. I hate feeling like I've wasted money but at least it wasn't too expensive. And forcing me through it would only add to the waste (time). I'm dropping it

I felt exactly the same about Skyrim, dropped it after a few hours.

Yeah, I find it strange when Skyrim and Fallout fans complain about TW3's combat. Skyrim has a really unsatisfactory and simplified combat system, so does the Fallout games from Bethesda.

Yeah i don't get how it's so amazing.
Like it's got a lackluster story (i think, i mean i don't remember so it couldn't have been great), boring quests being either talk to people, kill shit or collect shit and really average combat, so now even the kill shit quests are bad -_-
All it has going for it is it's visuals and lore... anyway back to playing the greatest RPG of all time, Final Fantasy XII.
