Forums - Gaming Discussion - Splatoon 2 Testfire runs at 530p undocked and 720p when docked

At least it will hold 60 fps sometimes.

I know coming from you this is a very positive comment but just in case, WiiU version mantain the 60fps like 95% of the time and rarely falls more than 5 frames, yet on Switch the performance looked even smoother, DF will have the last word there I guess.

Lucky nintendo gamers don't care about performance, but this looks pretty awfull

Well, they do.  It's one of the big things they talk about before the console is announced.  "It's going to be about as powerful as the PS4" and "can't wait to play Nintendo games that look that good."  Then, once Nintendo reveals another underpowered console it's "graphics don't matter anymore" and "I'll buy whatever Nintendo gives me, even if it's slightly above what I have, now, only portable."  Wash, rinse, repeat.

These negative Nintendo threads always seem to involve the same handful of people who I sincerely doubt ever play the games to begin with lol

All the videos I watched on youtube suggested they really liked the game; the only complaint I heard was that it uses the same sort of control scheme that Zelda does.

Seems rather silly to not only be outright negative, but to base it entirely on one person's educated guess that has yet to be confirmed or even rumored anywhere else.

I'm sorry but it's called valid criticism.

This is their next gen console and the game still runs in the same 720p as first game on the Wii U did.

Portable is 942x530... That's 499,000 pixels, around half of 720p (921,600)

They should have waited for Fall season with stronger Tegra, cause it's obvious they wanted to make it a hybrid, it could be a stronger hybrid though...

One reason I'm certainly waiting for confirmation of this is because the existing hardware is already more than sufficient to output better resolution than that. That it would be that low docked is positively perplexing, so I'm fairly skeptical until they come out and admit as much.

That said, I didn't even notice when watching the gameplay earlier, nor did those playing. Perhaps it's the cartoony look or the bright colors, but it really doesn't look like it lacks in the resolution department to the point that none of my usuals on youtube made any mention of it.

Well I still say that at that resolution and those visual it shouldn't be anywhere near 59 even a microsecond.

IQ is horrible

Looks like hot garbage in both modes

I don't even know what IQ is! All I knew was the game had a good framerate even with ink flying everywhere, there were new weapons and powers in the game, and I was running around as some sort of squid kid shooting ink everywhere. What other game lets you run around as some sort of squid-kid hybrid that shoots ink everywhere?

The thing that bothered me was the squeaks and chirps the Inklings make have been changed: I loved the old ones and seeing some of my favorite ones gone makes me quite sad... I hope I'll grow to like the new ones.

Also, no sign of a playable Octoling yet. Goddammit Nintendo! Put her behind an Amiibo if you want! I will throw you my wallet!

What? Of course we care about performance. What a silly statement...

Zelda BotW runs like shit on Wii U and everyone is pretends it's ok for "10/10" game.

I'm still amazed by enormous amount of Nintendo defenders.

Company killed Wii U two years ago, prepared zero new fucking games for Switch launch, make lazy Wii U ports which runs barely better than predeccessors, cut backward compatibility and charge you to play games online... And you still make excuse for them. Terrific.

When did I make excuses for Nintendo charging for online, cutting BC and killing the WiiU early? All Nintendo fans are not one entity you know...or at least you know now...or dont you trust a Nintendo gamer maybe...?

There's no way this is what the actual full game will run at when it releases. Nintendo wouldn't let that slide. I mean, the first Splatoon was even 720p on the Wii U and we know the Switch is a lot more powerful than that.  It's not even a demanding game, at least I don't think so.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe runs at 1080p, and I would say that looks easily more graphically demanding than Splatoon.

Probably just like that for the testfire.

We don't know the full picture yet. Zelda was an offline game but had the frame rate drop when the wifi was being accessed in the background by the operating system. Maybe a full blown online game needs more resources. It could be the wii u had a dedicated wifi processing chip being a home console but the Switch being based on mobile technology requires the main processor to do some or even all of that processing.

Chipset information here;

https://www.broadcom.com/products/wireless/wireless-lan-bluetooth/bcm4356/#overview

States;

  • Built-in media processing to off-load host processor and advanced idle power consumption performance, which significantly extends mobile device's battery life

Sounds like the chip does some or all processing although don't quite understand the wording, expected it to say signal processing not media processing and is that off-load 'to' or 'away' from host processor? Maybe an early firmware issue or maybe Nintendo hasn't implemented that feature for another reason in their design. Seems like less support chips on the Switch pcb than the Nvidia Shield.

This thing will be so damn outdated next year, it can't even handle Nintendo own exclusives in decent resolutions.

It will look horrible on 1080p and 4K TV's running in 720p.

Did you forget Mario Kart 8, one of the most demanding games on WiiU, is here running at 1080p when on WiiU was 720p? Same with Fast Racing Nero, which was burning the wiiu hardware and still was sub 720p while here is 1080p

"Underpowered." There is not a device today with a formfactor like this that is as powerful as this. It is anything but underpowered. That's like calling an iPad underpowered and then comparing it to gaming rigs.

You know immediately preceeding what you bolded it does say "As someone who isn't interested in portable gaming." I don't care about form-factor, I'll be using it as a home console 99% of the time.

it doesnt matter how you use it, that doesnt change the fact that its powerful for what it is.

if someone primarily plays their iPad games on the TV through AirPlay or Vita games on the TV through PS TV, that doesnt all of a sudden make those devices weak.
