Forums - Gaming Discussion - Map towers vs auto map vs no map

How do you prefer to explore in games

Map towers (unlock large chunks) 23 27.38%

Auto map (reveal as you go) 48 57.14%

No map (make it yourself) 10 11.90%

Other (please explain) 3 3.57%

Total:84

In Zelda all the icons that you have to place manually, like unsolved Korok riddles, mini bosses, unopened shrines, great ferries, enemy camps, hidden shops, interesting places and resources should be mapped automatically but only after you discover them for the first time.

I find the towers one of the most rewarding parts of the game.

Is that because of the challenge of getting to the top and unlocking a fast travel point from which you can glide a long way?
Or is because it reveals all the terrain around you?

Would it be just as rewarding without the map reveal (put a nice item on top and a trampoline launch for even better height for gliding) Or would the map reveal without the tower (eg conquer a camp) do the same for you?

I do not like the map feature in Zelda, you are basically blind at first and even after you unlock the map, it is basically empty and useless. The map should be empty at first but auto map and remember everything you visited in detail, so you can find later. Also the map should let you know where you have already been and where not.

In Zelda the map remembers almost nothing and displays next to no information, it is not a tool but a obstacle for the player.

Yeah that's why I started disliking it. If you want to track where you've been you basically have to put markers everywhere which makes it a mess. Plus it makes me explore the game zone by zone as a crutch to try to keep track of where I've been.

Everything!! I love the challenge of climbing to the top of the tower, the joy of unlocking that piece of the map and the excitement of scouting out the area to see what I'm gonna do next.  It's a very rewarding piece of the game.  Auto map might be more convenient but a lot less rerawrding.

What if they made it so that doing a shrine would fill out that small section of map? It would effectively be a soft combination of both.

Yeah, not only for shrines. That could also work for completing an objective in an area which then reveals that area on the map, filling in the gaps to satisfy completionists :) some kind of smart fill feature, since going back and forth to 'paint in the desert' would get tedious too. Same as the extent of a lake you happen on can be filled in for as far as you can see, yet not everything that's on the shore in great detail.

My problem with self filling maps is that sometimes you pass by an area without actually doing the content of the area. This could be a workaround.

Auto-map enhanced with other features is probably the best choice. For example, towers are a fine feature for enhancing the auto-map feature if their effectiveness is lowered. But it'd be great if there could be other ways of gathering intelligence too. For example, Final Fantasy XV has the nice 'Talk' features in restaurants, which reveals interesting points on the map. It's too powerful, but it's a nice idea.

I rather the map reveal itself as you visit the area than to have a "tower" element reveal a big portion of it instantly. I didnt like it in Horizon and I didnt like it in BOTW. It just a small detail of course, it doesnt ruin the experience of the game for me- any game- but Im not a big fan of that map reveal system. BOTW is plagued with hidden small puzzles and shrines so the towers didnt really add much to it for me.

I want one where the map is simply mapped by eye sight. If it is hill it is a bit more grey till you explore around the hill. That would make towers more useful in my eyes.

I prefer towers... I'm just over them. Ubisoft were on to something unique. Now nearly everyone does it. Some games can still encourage you to explore with the towers like BOTW seems too. Others just reveal everything. Shadow of Mordor, while an awesome game... Is guilty of this IMO.

I prefer games auto mapping. As you go in the world. Getting the map unlocked. Is usually what I do first, in every game. That requires it. I can't stand no seeing the basic layout. Other than that. The only other complaint: Is that you can't see your special markers. Without you using your slate scope. Just have those 6 markers visible, at all times.

Reminds me of how Shadow of the Colossus' map cleared up a bit with each colossus you killed. I think it works well, it would certainly be better than the towers - not that I had a problem with them, and they were pretty fun to climb (lots of different challenges on each one), but after unlocking them all the whole game just lost some of that wonder.

Find it interesting how different people do games. Me unlocking BOTW map was going. "Finally. I can focus on my missions."
