I'm pretty indifferent on it so far. I don't understand why people are upset about them changing the setting. I don't think Netflix would have put money into it if they were just going to copy over the mediocre Death Note live action. They would just get it licensed and on Netflix.

Don't care about whitewashing.

Though knowing the death note story, having watched anime and read, I have no idea why they didn't just create new characters. Then you can also come up with your own story and thus be something new and not "predictable" as well as casting whoever you want and not getting people upset that they ruined L or something. Or as is commonly said "whitewashing"

Also, I feel this would have made a good series, versus a movie.

You have several Japanese live action adaptation. 2 main movies, 1 spin-off movie and a mini TV series. I've seen the 2 main movies, they're pretty good for live action movies and have been well received. The third movie is known as a bad one, so I never watched it. I don't know the mini series.

1. People will actually watch it.

2. It's going to be drastically different the original so people will go into it wanting it to fail.

Well, Death Note is originally a thriller based on mind games and psychology.

If Netflix wanted to make a movie "full of nudity, swearing and violence" like they said they're making, maybe they shouldn't use the Death Note name. A Transformers-like movie using the "The lord of the rings" name would surely be poorly received too...

Swearing and Violence is hardly a reach for Death Note. Pretty sure those were already there lol.

Shoehorning nudity will probably be low brow. Will see how it actually plays out.
