There are touch only based games (such as Voez) which are best played using the tablet without the joycons which can feel like they're getting in the way for a game centred around only touch based inputs with your fingers.

Oddly, the Switch being a hybrid has left open the door for Sony to do well by putting a true handheld on the market. Unfortunately, they probably weren't ready for that eventuality and have nothing planned. Opportunities like this have a small window while releasing hardware takes years.

Maybe this is why Nintendo was so zealous about guarding details on the Switch?

Right now, one of the best things the Switch has going for it is a lack of competition in the dedicated handheld space. I think a cheaper, more portable handheld could have stolen away some customers.

Not really sure how much smaller they can make the screen and not compromise the experience of a home console game on the go.

So the fair comparison is with 3DS closed, you don't hold the upper part but only the one with touchscreen!
