Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Seiken Densetsu ( Secret of Mania ) Collection announced for Switch

Tagged games:

$57 CDN which will mean a $59.99 price tag is far too expensive for a collection like this. $29.99-$34.99 (would be reasonable) but I could not justify spending this amount.

Im being realistic. Im saying if they sold it for 1-2$ on VC, people wouldnt pirate it nearly as much.

Instead of a small hardcore fanbase buying it at 45$, if they sold each title for 2$, they would sell like 100 times more of these games.

"How can you promote piracy so casually?"

I didnt, I said it was going to happy with this price.

So "how can you blatantly ignore, price's effect on piracy?" I ask you instead.

Secret of Mana is one of the most beloved games of all time. If Square sold it for $2 on the VC then they'd be tacitly admitting that they're selling junk.

And the VC store would get the reputation as a place that sells junk.

Cultivating a fanbase that will pay $45 for a physical release of a collection of old games is more valuable than selling stuff on the cheap to hundreds of people who will play it for five minutes and then forget about you IMO.

Devaluaing your own properties in an attempt to attract consumers who don't like paying for stuff is probably a bad idea.

So, Sony PlayStation Store pricing, nobody bats an eyelash:

PSOne:  $5.99
PS2:  $9.99-$14.99 (GTA Trilogy is $34.99, which is $11.66 per game)

But, Nintendo Virtual Console games (which this isn't, it's a physical + digital release from SquareEnix) MUST start at $1, or everyone loses their minds.  Why, because Nintendo has been around longer and has a library that predates the PlayStation brand?  I'm pretty sure if there was a PlayStation console in the SNES/Genesis era, Sony wouldn't be selling games from it in their online store for .99 cents a piece.  And, to reiterate, Nintendo didn't dictate to SquareEnix that Square has to price their collection at $45.  Yet, I haven't seen 1 comment saying Square is asking a bit much (again, despite the fact that they are also commiting a physical release to this collection), only that NINTENDO is crazy for choosing this pricepoint (which again, they didn't.  Square did).

People do complain quite often about pricing of PS2 games. $15 is widely criticized. Even then, those PS2 classics at least have things like trophy support.

The reason why Nintendo is criticized for pricing on virtual console is that they're always more expensive than their competition (not to mention you have to purchase them multiple times per console space). N64 games should be $7, not $10. SNES games should be $5, not $8. NES games should be $2-3. The extra push behind it is that the files you download on VC are just straight ROMs. There's no extra work done to them, just publisher ensuring they have the license.

Again, you are telling Nintendo that they have to start their pricing tier at $2, while Sony can start it's pricing tier at $6.  Why, because Nintendo has more tiers?  On the PlayStation Store Pac-Man (1980) is $3.99 and Ms. Pac-Man (1981) is $4.99.  But sure, Nintendo's NES tier should be $2.  At least Nintendo's tier prices are unified.  Not Super Mario 64 is $9.99, but Ogre Battle 64:  Person of Lordly Caliber is $14.99.  If one N64 game is $9.99, they all are.  (By the way, I don't disagree with you on it being sh*tty to have to repurchase vc games from console to console.  I think on Wii U, I got discounts for any VC games I also had on Wii.  So hopefully they do completely come around on that)

I said $2-3, because some of the NES games are just horrible. Obviously, the better titles are worth more money (I'd drop $3 on the old Mario games), but I can't justify paying even $1 for Balloon Fight

Sony gets to start their pricing tier at $6, because their games are generations newer. Things get cheaper as they get older. That's how games, music, and movies all work. Pac-Man isn't apart of Virtual Console system. It was ported to the system with some updates and released as a standalone title. Not part of the "Classics" series. Same thing with what is happening here with Mana series (unsure of what's being added though. Would hope that the remake from iOS/Vita is what's included).

Edit: I'll also say it helps that Sony has actual sales on PSN. It's easier to swallow a pricing structure when it also has support for huge discounts. Just right now, there are several PS1/PS2 classics for <$3.

I will say that pricing though ... for what is basically three ROMs ... yikes. I want it but it's kind of a ripoff.

All games are basically roms. It doesn't change the fact that developers are going to charge money for them.

a GB game and 2 SNES games? for 45$ US?

Your phone can play these games, your tablet, your laptop/desktop ect.

Most people probably already have played these.

These are 22-26 years old games, its crazy their not sold for like 1-2$ each on virtual console.

That said Seiken Densetsu 2,3 are still decent games today.

But you can get them off a rom site for free, and play them on any device.

That 45$ price tag nintendo put on these is kinda nuts.

Yeeah, the more I look into it it's not quite as cool as it initially sounded. Aside from the fact that it sounds like a good chance it won't even be localized, I didn't realize it's going to be around a $40 price tag. Figured it could be a cool way to play Seiken Densetsu 1 and 3 since I've never played them before, but apparently the consensus is they're not quite as good as Secret of Mana.

Though I'd still like to play them, and it'd be cool to play one of my favorite games ever, Secret of Mana on my TV and on the go interchangably. Roms are ok and all but they're not exactly the same as having a physical copy and using a gamepad, specifically w/the separate joycons and HD rumble and all.. I'd probably still buy it if it can with all three games translated at 40, but yeah that's a bit much even for a collection that includes one of my alltime favorite RPGs.

Seeing as Seiken 3 was never released in the west, I don't really see this coming over sadly, figuring SE won't localize the 3rd due to it being such an old game to work with.

The first game, for the Gameboy, is pretty nice.
It feels a bit like Zelda.

Yeah, I read that, and I see there's actually a remake of it, for Gameboy Advance called Sword of Mana: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_Mana

And there was another remake of the same game called Adventure of Mana on iOS, Android and Vita.
