You lot arguing about what a hybrid system should be classed as is as daft as people arguing whether a mix race person is black or white.

you're got that completely flipped, it's a handheld with a home console mode. The hardware is on the handheld, not the dock. Lmao, i'm still completely baffled that people think the switch is a console and not a handheld. |
Because Nintendo themselves said home console with a handheld option. Bad choice oof words, but I see why they did it.
The line between home console and handheld is being blurred in terms of quality. Nintendo are using this as their trump card as MS and Sony have yet to pull something off to this degree (remote play has too many flaws to even compare).
I think the main reason they worded it like this was to ensure fans that big IPs will be on the same scale as current gen consoles even though the core unit is portable. One cannot deny that Breath of the Wild or the new Mario is/will be every bit as advanced as anything on the PS4 or X1. Sure graphics might take a little hit, but lets face it, most PS4 or X1 games are just like the games we saw on the 360 and PS3 but with better visuals (with both the WiiU and the Switch being more powerful than those two as well).
To me, the Switch is the Switch. It is both. However if I HAD to choose, I would also say it is a portable with a handheld option. The reason is simple. If a game is available for my PS4 and Switch, the PS4 will obviously have the better visual fidelity. However if I were to get it for the Switch, it would be the ability to play the exact same game in portable format.
Switch is a great gaming device that has a lot of potential, especially with Nintendo IPs to back it up. People need to stop trying to lable it and enjoy it for what it is. Anything otherwise will do more harm than good.
As for MH, I say Nintendo needs to do whatever it takes to keep it exclusive. It will be a huge system seller and will only help the Switch moving forward. I don't see this franchise going multiplat anytime soon, regardless of what some people might want.

Fuck Monster Rancher, I want Jolly Ranchers.
In serious though, MH on the Switch will do wonders for the machines sales when it happens, just hope it is sooner rather than later and the Switch could reach Wii levels of sales in Japan.

See, this is why i cba with fans. What is it's main function? Where is it at it's full power? When it's docked. That's it. You have the option to underpower it and take it around, so it has that option. Now please, come up with all the convuluted twists i don't care about. Seriously though, this has nothing to do with what we were discussing. I don't believe a monster unter HD will be exclusive to switch, but we'll see. That's all. I don't care about your views on wether you think it's a portable or not. |
Essentially this is a distinction without difference. One could argue that the Switch's natural operating mode is the handheld mode and that it is over clocked in console mode because power constraints have been lifted, that is not important.
For what it matters to Japanese Monster Hunter players and gamers in general the switch is portable. They can play local coop at work or school. They can play on the train. That is what matters. Not how it scales its resources or by what other means it can be played. Japanese like portable Monster Hunters because they support local coop, and they can play in their transient lifestyles. That is all that is relevant to this topic.

People are just idiots.
Some are saying things like "errhhh da Switch is a handheld lol I'm so smart" or "the Switch is a console, not a handheld".
I do not understand some people sometimes- how hard is it to comprehend the Switch? Weren't casuals supposed to be the ones confused over this? Here we are whining over whether a hybrid is a console or a handheld. Smh. |
I dunno. It's fine calling it a hybrid and all, since that's what Nintendo markets it as, but I feel it's just the strongest handheld to date that happens to ship with a docking station to plug into your TV. To my understanding, docking it doesn't actually do anything- it can apparently do 1080p by itself, it just doesn't have a 1080p screen. Of course, I could be wrong, as my interest is minimal until it drops to a reasonable price.

Monster hunter tri was outstanding. I have not bought though the wiiu version as it was the same game. An open world monster hunter could be phenomenal.

You are objectively wrong. It has a battery and can be taken on the go. It literally is portable. You still don't make sense. You want to believe in something wrong? Fine but stop trying to push this nonsense on anyone in this topic. |
This all day! People will start arguing that tablets are desktop computers next...
Switch is soon basically going to be the only portable system regardless of how you want to classify it.
3DS doesn't have long to live, lets be honest, and Vita is basically dead already. Switch is the only system you can use as a portable that won't be a dead ecosystem in a year's time.
Monster Hunter is primarily a portable franchise.
Do the math.
