Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch Revisions Are Basically Already Possible

Thanks to the Tegra X2/Parker chip basically already being available, Nintendo could revise the Switch already. In fact I would guess they already have Switch revision models up and running in their R&D department.

Because the Tegra X2 consumes about half the power for example, you could have a Switch model that has 5-8 hours of battery life while playing a game like Zelda: BoTW for example and because it would generate significantly less heat, the system could be made smaller too. Now that might be tricky with Joycon size likely having to remain standard, but the right/left black bezels could be cut out, which would significantly reduce the width of the system, while having a better battery life.

Or conversely you could have dock level performance in undocked mode while keeping the same form factor and potentially a larger screen. So for instance, you could have a Switch that runs Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 1080p even while undocked.

My guess is you will see Tegra X2 based Switch systems in 2018 for the first wave of Switch revisions. Something like this

Switch Mini - Cuts down the right/left bezels for more compact size, improves battery life to 5-8 hours. So smaller + better battery. $249.99 MSRP w/game bundled.

Switch Pro XL - Same size as current Switch, but increases screen size to 7.5 inches 1080p (less bezel), can run at docked performance in portable state. $299.99 MSRP w/game bundled.

I'll take the Switch Pro XL from your hands right now .

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

The moment a better version shows up, I'll buy it and sell the current one.

Intel Core i7 8700K | 32 GB DDR 4 PC 3200 | ROG STRIX Z370-F Gaming | RTX 3090 FE| Crappy Monitor| HTC Vive Pro :3

that and the wait for software is why i'm not diving in any time soon

as soon as the first revision/upgrade drops is when I get the Switch

My guess is the switch revision will expand the screen to get rid of the black bezel, but the surface area will remain constant. I'm guessing the whole reason the screen is as small as it is right now has to do with battery life.

I wouldn't expect a revision until Nov 2018 at the earliest, though.

Neither really makes any sense.

As soon as you change the form factor, the joycons aren't compatible and a new dock would likely be required. It would make more sense to sell a standalone compatible screen than a new model. Higher res on the portable is completely unnecessary.

3D Switch is the only remodel that makes any sense and that's pretty useless too.

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Cutting out the left/right black bezels don't interfere with Joycon compatibility at all.

Higher resolution screen would make sense for a model that can run the docked performance while undocked, so that makes perfect sense to me.

3D as a craze is long since over, no one cares about that anymore.

1. Nintendo isn't going to do a remodel for bezels.

2. Current joycons will be too big for a smaller screen

- Nobody's asking for docked performance in portable mode. Battery life is more important.

- 3DS models have outsold the cheaper 2DS since it released. I'm of the opinion that a 3D Switch would also be capable of some sort of VR when put in a headset. I agree 3D/VR aren't going anywhere (atm?) but it's Nintendo and the Virtual Boy and 3DS are the only ingredients missing from Switch.

I think Nintendo has clear intent to sell multiple Switch units to people, the same way they have with 3DS.

So yeah, I think that's going to happen.

Nvidia themselves said they see this partnership going on for several decades - so you got to figure they'll have another Tegra chip suitable for the Switch in the next few years.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I never said the screen size gets smaller, not sure what you are reading. Shaving off the black bezel on the right and left side makes the system a good deal shorter in width with the same screen size and full Joycon compatibility with significantly better battery life.

You may not want docked performance, but again you may change your mind when you see future titles, some of which I'm sure the docked version of games will run considerably better than the undocked mode.
