Forums - Sales Discussion - Wii to Outsell PS3 and Xbox 360 Combined in '08, says analyst

I honestly don't think analysts take games yet to be released and how much of an impact they will have into account when predicting sales figures.

But gamers rely on future games a little bit too much. Anybody remember Lair? Heavenly Sword? Not saying they are good games...just saying that sometimes we gamers hype up a game soo much that we believe they will become system sellers when in fact very little change occurs.

but... PS360 08 sales > Wii 08 sales

Realistically, prolly yes. But nobody predicted that the Wii will be this good either. Is it just me, or are more people getting used to the idea that the Wii will be number one for 2008, but it's now 2009 that is doubtful?

I think he is high on 360 sales, just about correct on PS3 sales and a bit low on Wii sales for the fiscal year, though Nintendo will probably announce a lower projected shipment total initially before hiking it.

Another interesting note is that he says Sony shipped 9.0 million PS3s in the fiscal year.  Sony's most recent fiscal year projection for PS3 shipments was 9.5 million, so shipping 9.0 million would be a slight, essentially negligible miss (~5%).

I'm not really sure why he included Microsoft in the comparison...the Redmond giant's fiscal year ends at the end of June rather than the end of March...

23m for Wii is more than possible. We'll find out soon enough, when Ninty's projections for the next 12 months appear. Given that manufacturing was 1.8m/month a while back, 23m is just under 2.0m/month.

Nintendo still won't have any issue selling all the stock they can put on the floor - with a price cut at worst.

lol do you think being an analyst is his day job that brings home the check?

Naah, his real job is being.....THE PATCHER!!

Wherever the internet gets broken, he lurks around and...patches things up.

.....of course that is just an assumption.

The best counterargument to people who think upcoming titles will completely change the race would be X360's performance. Although somewhat lacking in variety, most reasonable people admit that it has the best library of all this generation's consoles, yet the PS3, with the weakest library, is matching 360 in NA and overtaking it everywhere else.

Library is important, no doubt. And big releases will cause a short-term surge in unit sales, but they don't drive an entire year's worth of sales all on their own. There are many factors at play.

True, but PS3 sales have been boosted by the price cut as well.

I got an even better one.

Remember the....N64.

That machine had, quite literally, some of the best games ever created...including THE best game ever made, Ocarina of Time (according to reviewers, rankings and gamers, of course). With soooo many good games, it is a wonder how it failed to win its generation. That is where your reasoning comes in. The library is important, no doubt, but pricing, and that X factor is also needed as well.

But for how long? Sometimes there are situations where a bad start can haunt a system for the rest of its life you know...
