Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switch is powered by stock Tegra X1

After 10 hours of Zelda I can honeslt say this... I could not care less about the SoC inside, such is the scope of this game, and the fact that I can take it ANYWHERE with me, and this is what matters, games and possibilities, not numbers.

Unfortunately most "gamers" nowadays worry more about numbers than actual games... on the other side, fortunately, real gamers, know how to enjoy games and focus less on shenanigans like flops

Probably, that is not enough for "his" idea of what a console should have. Like if that matters... Shenmue was on a console with less than 2 GFlops of power and it is still one of the very best games I've played... and still playable today. Many others with awesome 6 TFlops available on PC are a waste of HDD... Software make the machines, not hardware.

What are you talking about? This console is likely the fastest console on the market (in terms of UI) since the cartridge days of the 90´s. I know it´s only anecdotal but I haven´t had a single issue with it´s performance so far, which is also the case for a friend of mine who bought it. Getting from sleep mode to playing Zelda is only a few seconds.

This 'all 2,5m launch units are really just devkits and not finalized hardware' is pretty much debunked with the confimation that developers have access to three cpu cores and 3GB of ram for games. The rest is reserved for the OS. These specs aren't going to change anymore, except maybe to improve OS efficiency and free up more RAM and CPU (By moving the OS to the 4 smaller cores) for games.

Yes now that information is released clearly it is 4GB. I never realised the Switch background operating system would be so resource hungry with regards a whole cpu core taken. The graphic user interface looked so basic and simplistic I thought Nintendo had really paired it back to give more resources to games but I guess now we are down to about 14,000 mips cpu performance for games, between wii u and 360/ps3 and now the memory bandwidth of only 25.6GB/s has to support both games and the background operating system. This explains now why the Switch is performing to such a low level, below expectations to be honest. I even suspect Zelda is using the 200 gflops boost mode in portable mode hence the low battery life. Perhaps they were forced to do this when Zelda on wii u was actually performing above portable Switch mode at 150 gflops.

It also looks like background processing is also used for wifi and possible other processing so that has an effect to. Maybe extensive use of wifi will effect frame rates on  games with network features.

The fact it is a stock X1 though which I stated as a possibility as soon as we saw the teardown of the Switch with no Nintendo branding on the chip means I'm still hopeful of an improved pcb revision sooner rather than later. Maybe such a model will launch for this Christmas. It will look identical but just be cooler running with slightly improved battery life and quality improvements to the display and bluetooth antenna's.

So by saying Stock tegra 1, what is the op trying to say?

Can anyone explain?

There was no customization this time around like the past, it's the same chip you will find in a Shield TV Pro/2017 but with more RAM.

The Switch is using Maxwell at 20nm Planar. It's old and out-dated.
It's almost two Tegra generations old now.

Huh? They don't even have a consumer variation of the X2 yet o_O; Though it would have been nice for them to use it for the Switch Here is hoping for a Switch+ soon lol. It would be nice to have a Xavier type once the cost gets lower but I doubt it since it's Nintendo and they will just go with X2 or something.

The X2 has been available for OEMs since last year.

Tegra Volta has been demonstrated in Cars as recently as January, so final Silicon isn't far away for that either.

Partially right. Wifi does use CPU resources, albeit not allot. We need proper answers on what is going on with that issue before we can make a proper analysis.

So all Nintendo needs to do is use the TX2 for Switch Mini and Switch Pro. Zero effort, much more power, double battery time. Since the current System costs not more than 150$ to produce, they can even keep the price.

In the next three years right? or you expect a switch pro to come out next year?

I would have worried and quivered before launch to hear this but, with the console in my hands, it's of no concern. Fast RMX is a great upgrade from Wii U, Zelda runs at a higher resolution with fewer framerate drops, MK8 will run 1080p60 - I'm happy with the slightly improved performance + vastly improved portability. It really is a slick little device once you get your paws on it.

Just out of curiosity... what console did you own before you got the Switch?

I have a host of retro consoles from the NES to the 360. I take it you're interested in current gen, though. I have a PS4 and Wii U, in addition to the Switch.

To be honest overall this is good news. If Nintendo had used some wonky highly propietary version of the chip, it would've made future die shrinks a huge pain in the ass.

I think we'll get the Tegra X2 in future Switch revisions if only for power savings, and then the Tegra Volta chip will basically be the Switch 2. That should allow comfortably for PS4-tier visuals on the go.

More like 5 movies with 5 popcorns, if it's just $50.

hahahaha.........no.

Its like $25 minimum for a ticket, popcorn & a drink

Depends where, I guess :) $6-7 is the highest price of a ticket over here, with popcorn and a drink you'll end up paying $10-12 tops.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

$13 where I am. But you are looking at a good $22 for a regular popcorn and drink.

So converted into USD that would be $16.25 for the ticket and $27.50 for the popcorn and drink.
