Forums - Politics Discussion - Muhammad Ali Jr. Detained at Airport Again

Sources:

International Business Times

The New York Times

“The officer said, ‘What religion are you?’ And I said, ‘Muslim.’ He said, ‘Come with me.’ So he took me to another room,” Ali told "CBS This Morning" in February. “It’s like he didn’t believe me, or whatever. But he asked me again, ‘What is your name? And what is your religion?’ And again I answered.”

This is nuts. Poorly implimented plan in my opinion. Not a muslim ban they say..

So actually reading the article it seems he was stopped because of his ID card and allowed to proceed when he presented his passport. To which I've got to ask is being able to travel just presenting an ID card normal in the US? I'm a European so to me a passport is seen as the only form of ID for travelling, so I'd be quite surprised if somebody wasn't stopped for trying to present a different form of ID. Is that not the same in the US?

What? I'm european and I haven't had to show my passport ever since going to India years ago. I travel exclusively with my ID card within europe and it's completely fine.

But of course it's not a Muslim ban..

For real? I've literally never heard of people travelling without passports before.

Yeah if you're from a EU country and travelling to another EU country you don't need a passport at all. ID is enough.
That even extends to countries that have agreements with the EU or your country of origin. I've personally travelled to Turkey using only my ID.

It is for the best i guess. Dont want another surprise like 9/11

Yeah, for real! XD

Maybe it's bacause I'm from the mainland? But even traveling in and out of the UK I only ever needed my ID card. UK does actually check them on entrance though, most other european coutries only check on departure and let you enter unchecked. I know a ton of people that don't even have a passport (It's a separate application process from the ID card) and still travel all over europe.

Passport is only for international travel here. Also I've never had to show my ID to get on flight, ever. They just check your boarding pass here.

I remember you could drive into the US with just a Candian drivers license... No silly star wars checkpoints either with 50 cameras and scanners pointing at you. As when I lived in Europe, no passport needed either. Borders are nothing more than a sign next to the road. A friend of mine was a pharmaceutical sales rep, flying through europe all the time. Used to show up right at boarding time, running straight through into the airplane like catching a bus. No checks needed, just boarding pass. But the world is much safer now....
