Forums - Sales Discussion - Switch Launch Sales Numbers are Manufactured?

So if they make 1 billion Switches, they will all be sold?

Genious!

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Oh boy...

@OP:
Don't let the negative comments fool you, you're perfectly right of course:

It's the video game console manufacturer themselves who determine their launch sales numbers.
Because unless the producer would ship an insanely high amount of hardware units for launch, it's guaranteed that your product will get sold out in most places shortly after launch - so the launch sales numbers are more or less identical to the numbers of units shipped for launch.

And these days, with for example all kinds of online shops accepting "preorders" etc. months before launch, the console manufacturers can estimate the demand at launch quite precisely.
If I were a video game console producer, I'd try to always ship about 10-20% more units for launch than at the launch of the previous console. That way, I'd get free "launch sales record!"-news every single time one of my consoles launches.

What's with all the negative responses?

Part of what the op said makes sense. They made more consoles this time around so they sold more.

This is clever since they can create buzz with gaming sites reporting how it's breaking records, beating even the mighty ps4. Consumers see it as a must have item to own, the way they did with ps4. Weren't there stories of people going to stores to buy an xb1 and leaving with a ps4 because of everyone else getting a ps4? Casual gamers are much more easily persuaded than most of us here.

Hype and buzz can do wonderful things for a produce. Just look at iphone. I bought a wii because everyone was talking about it. And even though I was planning on buying a psvr, I may not any time soon. Companies need to rethink their console launches.

The problem is that you are doing the same mistake as the OP, stating something unsubstantiated as fact. Where does this story come from? It originated from the OP:s own mind and is therefore the only reference point we have to go by. There are no references to any articles supporting this idea, and press releases ttat doesn´t make sense or any third party reports that would hint to this.

It sounds more like a conspiracy theory than a valid idea of why Nintendo had such a big launch.

France is pretty good example of what OP is saying.

The Switch had a better launch than the PS4 in France (something like 110k against 90k). France is a really Nintendo friendly country, yes, but the PS4 was also completely sold out for weeks (and I know, I ordered one at launch and got it weeks later), when the Switch was still available on Amazon and in some stores 2 days after launch.

So the Switch had way better stocks in France than the PS4 or the Wii (also sold out at 100k back then), it's proven.

So, most people are wondering what the OP is smoking, but his idea is not totally crazy.

The Wii was sold out for months, ergo the only reason Wii didn't sell much more at launch was because of supply at launch.

Same for switch. They have a record launch thanks to record supply.

No, but since what they made has sold out nearly everywhere, we can say the limit to launch numbers was  the supply.

Absolutely, but that doesn´t equate to sales figures being manufactured by a console company, in essence saying that they are deliberately trying to mislead the public about their actual numbers. What I object to is the notion wether or not they had more stock than they claimed and tricked with their numbers, when there is no evidence of that.

What are you even talking about? Never did I state that this is a fact. Read the bolded instead of jumping to conclusions. Or are you gonna go through every single post and say "ha, this isn't a fact". Newsflash, most of the time we're guessing what's happening.

I object to when people says it makes sense that the OP claims that Nintendo manufactured their sales number, in essence lying about their launch when there is nothing that support the idea other than a persons imagination.

still a doomed console though.
