Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy VII Remake battles are action-based, cover optional

If it's similar to the FFXV combat system... I'm out. Bored me to tears.

Think of it as the FFXV combat system if someone who actually likes action games was making it. This game is going to be loads of fun!

He keeps mentioning things that are not required which makes me think there isn't going to be very much strategy in the game. Switching characters being optional and not needed is a huge red flag. If you don't need to switch characters, then you could make the argument that they could even take out the option to.

We still have no idea what the final combat will be. There will be changes galore before the release.

I think you're being too cynical with this. There will obviously be benefits to changing characters depending on the situation, what he means is that the game will most likely just never force you out of using your favorite character if that's what you desire, and that the benefits of having a certain character in your party will show even if they're just there as party members.

Didn't we already know that? Just seals my decision never to buy/play it. And confirms what I already knew to be true, that nomura is single handedly killing the FF franchise.

I fail to see how's that the case, the only things Nomura has ever had big roles in regarding the FF franchise is this, FFVersusXIII (A game that didn't even get to exist), and Advent Childern. Please stop lumping everything together under one big name that's easy remember, it leads confusion and misinformation.

They should just fire nomura , everything he touches anymore turns into crap. he is a very very overrated game director / producer in my opinion.
A remake is taking the old game and making it look great with new tech, change a few things or add a few things. When u change how u play the game people loved , then it's not a remake but something else.

Are you a madman? Every project Nomura touches/has touched has been a success on some level, why would they fire a man that consistently puts out decently acclaimed and profitable games? That would make zero sense.

I thought that was already known...anyway, I hope it plays more like KH2 and less like Crisis Core...

Lets all wait to a more thorough trailer before we start dissecting and getting all upset over Gameplay changes. Be real. There's nothing wrong with an Action-Oriented Combat style with the assistance of menus a la KH: BBS. This game is going to be SE's most ambitious.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Yea, that comment made me laugh.  The man has actually been turning out good games, that sell.

@ OP

The change doesn't really bother me.  I like action RPGs more.  Though, I think this is going to be something of a hybrid.  Kinda wish they would just go full action RPG and turn-based, then just let people choose which they want in the menu.

I think I'm probably done with Final Fantasy. Time to move on.

You mean fire the man responsible for creating masterpieces like the Kingdom Hearts franchise and Dissidia, and which also had a role, even if small, on myriad FF games?

LOL

The issue lies with Square wanting to "modernize" the franchise, wanting to make it action based, because it has that dumb notion that turn based is now niche and wont sell.Nomura is just doing the best he can with the cards he has been given, not to mention that Square is streching him thin across multiple projects, which some are small and others gigantic. What really needs to be done is Square let him work on 2 projects at once at most, otherwise the quality will take a hit.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

To think that I almost bought a PS4 when this game was announced, now it seems like I dodged a bullet.
