Forums - Gaming Discussion - A Nigerian's thoughts on Orisa from Overwatch, the new Nigerian character

3. Numbani is just the name of a city that happens to be located in future Nigeria (whether or not the country still has this name in the game we don't know)

Turkish and German names are fairly different though. Not sure anyone of us would be able to differentiate between African names.

That's because you're more familiar with European names, so it's easier for you to differentiate between them. You're probably not as familiar with Africa, which makes it harder to tell the differences.

I was raised in Africa...

Well that is racists.

Might as well come out and say they all look alike while your at it.

Not being able to differentiate between Kenyan and Nigerian names makes me racist? Ok...

Interesting... more culture involved in games makes them interesting.

Africa a continent and it's huge. I think it's time people stop acting like it's some small country. I was raised in Canada yet I don't know what's happening in USA but both are in America... smh!

It's alright. Let's not escalate things. I don't think he means African names are all the same. I think he means he's not familiar enough with how names from different African nations and languages sound, so he can't differentiate between them easily.

This is exactly why I asked my questions. I know forums like this have participants from all over the world and many different cultures. So I expected that the way I would percieve the character would be totally different from the way most other people would. Similar to how an Iñupiaq person would percieve the game "Never Alone" in a totally different way from the rest of us.

That's interesting. Do you mind if I ask where in Africa? And where do you live now?

Well sorry, you have your account hidden, so I can't tell which country you're from.

It's inevitable. I'm ignorant about many things that I haven't ever had to interact with too. I didn't even know Numbani was a fictional city in futire Nigeria in Overwatch. I thought it was a separate fictional nation. I haven't played Overwatch yet anyway, but I will soon. I'm hoping this thread will be fun and informative for everyone. I'm not offended by anything anyone has said, so please guys, don't go at each other. I guess I'll be posting my own thoughts on the character about 11 hours from the time of this post (that will be when I get back from work, by Nigerian time).

Yes to all but the last two questions. I am Nigerian too, and to me all that i take from that character is that its "inspired" by an African and based on an African backstory.

Besides that, its a generic design choice to me, its a robot after all.At least beats a black person with cornrows or dreadlocks.

But I am not complaining, cause the way I see things like this, if you want your culture or country be better represented in some kinda game or whatever, rather than bitch about it go make the game yourself.

Did I mention that sh...its a robot?

That's so cool. My Fiancee is Yourba (I'm of Jamaican Descent.) I love to see this kind of representation in games. Too often Black characters even the GOOD ones follow the influence of stereotypes instead of Culture. I've never been a big MOBA guy so I haven't paid much attention to overwatch but good on them.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
