Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Do you like the Switch as a handheld?

I'm a hardware engineer, so as someone that has taken apart the dock, dumped both the SPI flashes and fiddled around with the code, I can say that while the dock isn't worth the $90 retail pricetag, it's still at least a $50 chunk of the cost alone.

[dock's board]

SPI flashes are located either side of the HDMI connector, other side of the board has an arm serial wire debug testpoint for dumping the MXIC ic, too, i've delved into all of the readable data in great detail, so i'm extremely familiar with what the dock does, how it does it, the BOM for such a device, and the bottom line, which is seemingly infinitely more than you, with your "if you think it's worth $90 this convosations over" stuff.

But hey, what do I know?, hell you even went as far as to pull the old "you don't even have one" nonsense, what do you think this is?

Cool that you open up your device! Made a thread from iFixit's teardown, and they also showed the usb-c circuitry.
I did notice two months ago that the usb-c docks weren't cheap: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=225224

Why didn't you post this in your thread? It would have been interesting.

I initially completel ignores the console side of it and didn't even hook up the dock. I used my wiiU as a big ol' handheld as well most of the time. I just love handheld gaming and the Switch is perfect for it.

I'm surprised by how much I like it as a console though. Zelda look gogeous on the big screen and the puppydog grip is surprisingly compfy.

The only drawback I can think of, is that I'm going to have to buy a second power adapter for charging in Handheld mode for long play sessions in bed.

Don't buy the official charger!

A phone charger and a generic C Cable work great! I'm using the exact same one I use for my phone. I bought some extra C Cables (5 for $19, I think) for at home use but you don't need the official product.

Really? How fast does it charge? Can you play and charge at the same time?

I was hesitant using a standart USB-charger because of the Switches 15V/2.6A specification. Powerbanks at 5V don't seem to really play nice with it either, so I thought I'd have to buy the official one. If c-cable + standart charger work, that's great news!

I personally cannot get enough, this may go down as my favorite system of all time, I love how beautiful games look on it, and I love that I can play these beautiful games anywhere.....people keep talking about graphics and how of a gap it is from PS4, regardless of the gap the games on it still look good, its not like it have ps2 graphics, and if Zelda can look this amazing when Nintendo said it was just a straight port with no added Switch features, makes me wonder how much more beautiful can games get if it was built from the ground up, bring it on Nintendo, I cannot wait to see what will be coming out in the next couple years, congrats for starting out strong with Zelda

I was playing while plugged into my Google Pixel's USB C charger, and my system was at about 25% I think when I started on the charger. A couple of hours later when I was finished and was walking to put it back on the dock, I looked up at my battery and it was at 99%. So yes, you can charge much faster than you can drain, it's awesome!

Adding, 2K basketball is one of my favorite "chill" games. I play 2K all of the time and am really looking forward to getting it as well as FIFA on my Switch.

Because If i posted the kinda stuff i've been getting up to, either i'd end up banned or ioi would be getting a takedown notice off of Nintendo.

I use my phone charger that use USB C and it is lovely, I barely use the dock with the Nintendo charger to charge it

I agree, as long as you using a everything USB C, no USB A or anything else it will work fine, make sure the power bank aka portable charger is a USB C charger, if it is then you can play and charge at the same time.......there is one on amazon for 19.99 and it will extend your Switch battery at max settings for 10 to 12 hours.........and for 60 to 70 dollars you can extend your switch to 20 to 22 hours on max settings, and even if you do not use your switch for all those hours you can still charge your phone with it and even a friend phone baefore you need to charge the portable charger up again

Depends how you present it. Some of these topics are touched upon in VGC if done properly.

If you are up to it, contact a mod and ask, it never hurts to ask.
