Forums - Politics Discussion - Philippines Pres. Duterte to sign smoking ban EO tomorrow.

It'll be the death penalty knowing him.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Does it say what the punishment will be for those who violate the law? I personally don't smoke and hate cigarettes (they make me feel sick when I smell them), but I wonder if this is a way to target even more people.

Death. :^)

Sarcasm?

One can drink in moderation, smoking likely not.

I taught that Greece had strict rules as a EU country, arent they obliged by those? I mean there are still some "bastions" in the EU that still allow smoking literally anywhere (Czech Republic). My girlfriend (non smoker) went nuts when even in a a high end restaurant there was actually no separate smokers section.

Didn't know it was that bad.

You can't definitively claim that one is worse than the other, since there's no such thing as secondary drinking or eating.
They're different issues.

Alcohol is the #1 killer drug out there on a global scale as far as I know. Also even if there is no second hand drinking there are still second hand issues caused by alcoholism. Here in Romania more than half of domestic abuse can be attributed to alcoholism.

Damn. Roughly a third of its population is smoking :| And hungary in thisr place. Was not expecting that... as a Hungarian (who lives in Romania) I am pretty surprised, as I never noticed it to be such a prelevant issue when visiting Budapest :|

Far from the truth.

If someone smokes at a bus stop and then enters the bus, his clothes are still gonna carry some of the smoke/smell (happened to me on Saturday and had problems breathing) .

When someone walks and smokes and you have to walk behind them (unless you cross the street to go walk on the opposite pavement), you will inhale some of their smoke.

If you pass by someone who smokes, you will inhale their smoke.

The list goes on.

This has nothing to do with you being close to them and everything with being unable to avoid smokers no matter when you go when it is legal everywhere in public. Designated areas are much better imo.

The problem with this, is that you will have to go a step further and start banning everything that is unhealthy. Smoking, even if only second hand, kills a whole lot of people, but so does sweets, fast food, car emissions and of course, the king of it all, alcohol. The question arises when are you still protecting the innocent bystanders and when your are trampling on other people's right (no matter how bad of a habit it is).

It's very simple. You can eat sweets, fast food, drink alcohol and none of that will kill or affect me. But if you smoke near me, and that shit gets into my airways, it can and will have an impact on my body. You should not have that right. Smoke all you want, I don't care. But I believe I have the right to NOT have said smoke in my face or around me.

Its not simple. That discussion lies in a grey area. You say drinking wont affect you, but what if the guy who got drunk went out driving? And the accidents he causes that kills innocent persons that had nothing to do with it?Should we ban people from drinking in bars too then?

Or how about dogs and cats? There are myriad persons who are allergic to them, some of them really allergic to them.Should we also ban people from walking with their dogs outside?Because you know, the ones walking on the street have the right to have NO fur on their faces and choke and whatnot.

If you go into this line of thought, everyone would be banned eventually, because it affects persons one way or another. We live in a society, and for a society to function, "sacrifices" needs to be made.

I obviously don't approve of public smoking (unless you're in a smoke shop or something), but I'm worried this'll only bring more deaths for undeserving reasons

WHO says 6 million people a year die because of tobacco and around 3.5 million because of alcohol (directly, then you have car accidents killing others and stuff) Not sure if you can say there "one is much worse as the other"

That's like saying one mass murder is a better person as the other just because one killed 1000 people and the other one killed 500 people.

But if people want it, they shall use it. Just not if they can harm others with it (smoking in public places, driving under influence of alcohol...)

I love to drink some alcoholic beverage from time to time for the taste (especially whisky, beer, port, wine) and I also see much more logic in that as to smoke cigarettes (which most who smoke only do because of addiction and not for the taste) but both sucks for many people^^
