Forums - Sales Discussion - Horizon Zero Dawn beats Zelda to No.1 in UK ( PS4’s biggest ever new IP launch)

Louie said:

So? Zelda is a launch title and most people are gonna buy it on Switch. Its sales potential is limited, it's only logical that Horizon sold more.

Zelda is a game with legs that will sell even five years from now. It's always been that way. Instead, let's just be happy that Hotizon seems to be a hit. It looks like a great game, looking forward to play it.

Not sure why you got so snarky there, he's just staying what the article says.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is truly a beast!!!

Great news for Horizon, hopefully had similarly good numbers across the rest of EU and NA. The downplaying is expected, but Zelda did ok and will have better legs.

Who would have guessed a big release on a new platform would perform worse than a big release on an established console in one of its strongest markets ?

Congrats to Horizon!

They don't hold because I already stated why. You still havn't showed me a valid argument why I should think otherwise.

Again, you say Zelda has Zero competition, yet ignore the fact that people make lots of comparisions between those 2 games even on this board. Second, there is only a limited number of Switch Units available for people to actually buy the game as I already stated to you, which you still don't get why Horizon sold better than Zelda. If there were twice as more Switch units available for the UK at launch, guess which game would be on top. And like I said, we don't know the certain numbers of software sold. But I doubt that it is higher than 120k.  Again, even if PS4 has thousands or even millions of other options, this is just in favour for my argument. Because as I said, the attach rate could be around 1,8 % depending of how many software were sold. Thus more than 90 % of PS4 gamers didn't care about Horizon Zero Dawn or bought something else.

We got an attach rate of 78% vs less than 10%? So, what are you trying to sell me?

Not trying to sell you anything. I'm not in that business. But if you are, good luck with your business.

"If there were twice as more Switch units available for the UK at launch, guess which game would be on top"

I don't and neither do you.

"Again, even if PS4 has thousands or even millions of other options, this is just in favour for my argument"

It is not. Ps4 owners can buy one of the many games avaialble for it (especially these two past months with all the critical acclaimed games that have come out and must have cost ps4 owners a pretty penny). Switch owners don't have anywhere near as many options. They bought the system and they need a game for it. Since the rest of the lineup is not very impressive, it's the game most will buy. Ps4 owners can buy Horizon much later, knowing damn well that it will get a price cut in a few weeks/months unlike most Ninty games.

"We got an attach rate of 78% vs less than 10%?"

Yeah, remember that game that came out 3 years after a console launched and had an attach ratio of 78%? Me neither. The comparison is ridiculous no matter how you put it.

Zelda doing well on Switch can only be compared to something like Uncharted Golden Abyss, the psv game that topped the UK chart when it launched, since, despite the fact that there were a few other vita titles available at launch, it was THE game to own with the handheld. Big launch games have incredibly high attach rates; nothing new here.

You didn't understand the point of the lower attach rate on PS4 for Horizon Dawn on your first part of your reply. What you've just said is already covered in the 90%+ of UK gamers which doesn't care about Horizon Zero Dawn on its first week.
You missed the point of the attach rate on your second part aswell. I am talking about the first week, not about 3 years.

We are still talking about the statistic in the OP.

No, it cannot be compared to something like Uncharted Golden Abyss. If you really want a compare then compare it to Twilight Princess on Wii. Because that's a way more similar situation.

Also:
Uncharted: Golden Abyss sold only 44k globaly in it's first week (UK 29k). It did 1.54 million lifetime globaly.
Zelda: Twilight Princess sold 432K globaly in it's first week (UK 13k ). It did 7.16 million lifetime globaly.

some anecdotal evidence:

When I want a game for my PS4, i go to my local stationary shop, that also sells games, on my way home after work. Usually they didn't even put it on the shelves on launch day. I always have to ask for them. Horizon was the first one that was already sold out when i got there.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Congrats to Horizon! Hope PS4 owners are enjoying it!

Horizon you absolute beast. Deserved #1 spot. Can't believe Sony have pulled this off. GG you have created a masterpiece. I'm sure digital sales are respectable too.
