It wasn't so much about Zelda. It was more about Guerilla Games pedigree and that they have no background making RPGs. This also dwarves every game they've made prior, when you consider how quickly it's selling.
Plus im sure a lot of people wanted to keep their expectations in check.

I've never doubted the game qualities. The E3 2016 gameplay demo was proof enough that guerilla was doing great work... What more people needed?
From the start, people responded really well to the world and characters of horizon, and people love open world games.
This had winner writtent all over it from the start.
