Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Breath of the Wild really that good?

Its amazing. As a guy who never finished a legend of Zelda game before, this game is amazing. I am saying never finished because I have wind waker HD Zelda ocarina of time and majora's mask but the restrictions sometimes got annoying before. I plan to finish majora's mask and wind waker but I am finding it really difficult to get back to ocarina for some reason. However this game is beyond amazing by far one of the best games I have ever played. Compared to other open world games that I have played like XCX, Assassin's creed and a little bit of final fantasy x this game offers the most freedom even on the edge of the map there is a clever way to never make you feel like it'd the edge but the wind is to strong to carry through

From the videos I've seen, graphically it doesnt look that good, and not seen any gameplay that would make me think that its any different from any other open world game.

I think this will be the first game my son will get with the Switch when he gets one, so I'll check it out, but it looks quite an empty dull world.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

It's a great game but not a 10 or even a 9/10. It's more like an 8.3/10..

Pros-

- LOVE the open world aspect. Seems a modern day return to NES Zelda in a sense which is one of my favorite Zelda games

- Looks gorgeous. Love the art style, like playing a giant epic painting..

- Cinematics/voice acting well done

- A ton of content

- Combat is a lot of fun for the most part

- Paraglider is hella fun

- Cool that you can interact with the environment far more than prior Zelda games, inching towards Skyrim level. You can also climb many steep areas which is quite useful

- Controls/Joycons feel great with the game overall

- Cool concept to ride horses, fun feature

Cons-

- Shrines, while frequent, mostly rely too much on puzzle gameplay for my tastes (though if you like puzzles, disregard). They're also quite short and easy, at least the ones I've played through

- Weapons usually seem to break far too often and quickly

- Stealth attacks could have been better implemented

- A lot of lame fetch quest type missions, especially with side quests

- Too much reliance on cooking, which feelings mainly like a chore

- Getting killed by elements like cold and lightning is annoying

- Stamina meter feels like it runs out too quick, though it can be upgraded

* Though note - I've only played through probably 20% or so of the game so some of these points may change as I progress

I just want to know if it's worth getting the game for me -- someone who just can never get into Zelda games. As a huge fan of melee based combat action-adventure games (like the Souls series) and puzzle games, I feel like I should enjoy Zelda games. But in practice, I never do.

I forced myself to get through Ocarina of Time, and it took approximately six playthroughs for me to finally beat it because everyone was yelling at me to appreciate it. Retrospectively, the only part of Ocarina of Time I enjoyed was Spirit Temple (which was fantastic, though the boss was really dumb and unfun).

I could never really get into Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess, though I did enjoy Majora's Mask's aesthetic. I adored the visuals of Wind Waker and really loved the idea of sailing, but when it came to the game itself, I couldn't stay interested. And I never tried Skyward Sword.

The only Zelda game that I can say I genuinely really liked was Link to the Past -- even though I never beat it myself. I just got halfway through.

So, I guess what I'm trying to get at is this: is BotW worth it for someone who's not a Zelda fan? Keep in mind, I adore Souls and Portal and adventure/puzzle games, I like (but don't love) Skyrim, and I adored Fallout: New Vegas due to its phenomenal sense of humor and great writing. Interesting stories, good writing, and compelling visual design are an important piece of motivation for me in video games, because I often can't get by on "just gameplay" alone -- unless it's Civilization, Project DIVA, Pokémon, or any Blizzard game.

So, I have three big questions:

1. How compelling is the story?
2. How good are the bosses? Zelda usually has terrible bosses, but if they are exciting, I will be convinced. They don't have to be the level of quality of say, Martyr Logarius, Artorius, Sif, Abyss Watchers, or Gehrman, but I want them to be something I look forward to.
3. Is the weapon durability system actually fun?

1. the story is pretty cool.. it is nothing spectacular (granted.. i haven't seen it all) but it is different from the other zeldas.. and that's a good thing imo.
also.. i can't explain it without spoiling stuff.. so yeah.. for what it is right now it is.. different.. and i'm not bummed about it

2. Bosses so-far are... different :P ... the are semi-bosses and real bosses.. the semi-bosses are hard as balls and the real bosses are mechanic-driven and range from easy to hard.. 'overworld-bosses' are the hardest.. so far.. not beaten the game.. not gonna explain more than it's different and it's good..

3. It forces you to think differently.. i had to leave a boss-battle cause my weapons broke down towards the end.. it was the only time where it was 'not fun'.. cause i had to go out (after getting my ass handed to me) and gather some new weapons.. you can upgrade your inventory slots so you can keep more on you at any given time. (bow, shield, sword)

if you just run in without thinking you will probably die.. like instantly. i have 13 hearts now.. and i can get one-shotted if i'm not careful (granted.. i probably have the wrong armor on, no resistance etc.)

it is a very good game.. i've played it for probably 25-30~hours now and I'm still finding new stuff all the time.. making my own goals and not doing that many sidequests.. just exploring.

i would prob rate it at a solid 9,5/10 right now it was a loooong time since i had this much fun playing a game.. this is a thinking persons zelda.. sprinkled with some meta-gaming (cooking, boosting, stats) and you can upgrade stuff..
i'm a sucker for loot->upgrade->more loot->more upgrades formula

^ are you just trying to troll or?
Play the game and you'll get it.. the gameplay is where it shines.. it does look good also, video does not do it justice.. ofcourse you can find better looking games though.

it is a Zelda physics sandbox where you stumble across alot of stuff to do, while having a 'grand goal' that you can pusue or just don't care about..

Try going back and taking a moment to read what I said... it doesnt match up with what you are saying. What I said was "From what I've seen".... i didnt say I've seen nothing of it.

Please dont quote things that I didnt say. I've attached it below so you dont have to go looking for it.

i didn't quote ( the ' was intentional) , but yes. Sorry, old phoenix wright habit of seeing contradictions in text..
didn't take in account the first part..

i do think you are approaching it the same way as a kid who 'doesn't like the food' before trying it but each to their own.
