Forums - Gaming Discussion - So many PS4 games have female leads

Well, 7 games is not "too many", but its fine, it weird how people dont like that. I dont see an issue tho, these games are written that way.

Did you just assume its gender?

I am not even assuming I am stating an android being a machine to not have a a gender. Even though IT has a female appearance and many of the fine qualities of a female body pocceses.

Maybe you should ask the person how he/she/it/hir/ze/sie/co/ey feels about this before assuming he/she/it/hir/ze/sie/co/ey identifies as genderless.

Seems a far cry from last gen when it was sort of tabboo by marketing people to feature a girl character prominently on the cover because it would sell less. Was Naughty Dog that broke the trend by refusing to hide away Ellie on the cover of TLOU?

I'd argue it's been a trend in gaming in general these last few years. It's something I first noticed, when we had a bunch of major game reveals with female main characters back in 2015. I don't think it's any coincidence this began to happen a few years after people began complaining about a lack of women in major releases. Although Japan has also always been better about this then western games anyway, which is why a bunch of those games hail from Japan.

For instance, Platinum's most well known character and name is probably Bayonetta. So it's certainly not unusual to see a game like Nier Automata from them.

In any case, it's a trend I've been happy to see. I like having variety in my video game protagonists. I just hope some of these turn out to be good characters.

Pretty sure the "no girls on covers" thing died as soon as it went public. Or at perhaps the likes of TLoU and Overwatch destroyed it.

Now that female representation is up, expect nitpicky complaints about portrayal, the leads just not strong and independent *enough.*

Well, this was never JUST about the number of women starring in games. This is also about the quality of the characters. And I'm not just talking about making sure every single one is a bland "strong independent woman with no faults". This is a trope that goes back to at least the 90s, and it's almost as bad as no representation period. And on that front, I think it can at least be argued that video games have some progress to make. But I'd also argue that characters like rebooted Lara Croft and Ellie from The Last of Us (assuming she is actually a main playable character in the sequel) are solid characters.

I think Extra Credits did a pretty good video on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1qndga6SNU

I had wished for female Link.

In all my game design books, it would always say 'she' instead of 'he' or it would keep switching back and forth. There was a large emphasis on sexual and racial diversity. It was a big emphasis how not being diverse limits your market.

I'm looking forward to the 2B costume in GR2.

Same! hopefully 2B gets Kat's custome as well

OT: really great to see more female leads on games, tho I can think of some people that don't like that

I tend to avoid games with female protagonists. Nine times out of ten they're being sexualized, and if I wanted porn then I would watch porn, not go play video games.

Odin Sphere has five main characters who are all playable for equal lengths of time and all have equally important contributions to the story. While the female protags outnumber the males 3:2, I would argue that you can't say there is a singular "main" character.

You could argue Velvet is the main character due to her proximity to the main Antagonist until you realize that Gwendolin is the reason Onyx turned into a big bad, Cornelius is the son of a big bad, and Ingway/Darkova only got involved because he hates Cornelius.

God Odin Sphere was a great game.

uh, what. PS3 had Valkyria Chronicles, Bayonetta, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Mirror's Edge, Final Fantasy XIII, Remember Me, Beyond Two Souls, Lolipop Chainsaw, Tales of Xillia.

PS has a lot of Japanese games, and Japanese developers tend to have more female main characters than their western counterparts.
