Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gaming shouldn't go over 4K. Once we fully achieve 4K we should focus on framerate!

Last gen was all about 720p, this gen SHOULD'VE been all about full 1080p and next gen 4K. But nope, it didn't work out like that.

In 2012 I finally ditched my 480p TV and upgraded to 720p and I thought that was the best TV ever! It was a 31" screen so the ppi was high. I NEVER thought about upgrading until 2016. Since 1080p TVs were heading out the door I snagged a 4K gaming monitor and sometime this week I'm going to snag a PS4 Pro.

When I played GTA V on PS3 I was stunned! The graphics looked so good. Qhen I played Nintendo Land and BO2 on Wii U I thought the graphics couldn't get any better! Then I got PS4 on my 720p TV and couldn't believe how advanced the graphics were. Then when I got my 4K Monitor my PS4 looked brilliant! THEN the PS4 Pro announcement came out and I thought to myself "Wait... it can get better?.... just 3 years ago I was blown away with GTA V on PS3 at 720p."

After the PS4 Pro I'm done lol. No scoprio, no nothing until next gen comes out. This gen at 1080p 60fps was good enough for me....

Once we fully get to 4K, i hope we focus on frame rate. Getting all games minimum 60fps and over. Resolution had it's time! Framerate we're looking at you! But hey, it's way too soon for us to fully achieve 4K. We're talking about next gen here!

What phone are u holding? Just curious

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Having been a child of the 80's and experiencing gaming when it was hitting on all cylinders CREATIVELY, I have the opinion that we should halt any and all effort to improve things like resolution bumps and frame rates etc. The industry is a shadow of it's former self when it comes to brand new, creative, industry changing games.

That would be my priority going forward if I had a say.

unfortunately this will never happen.

its not that we wont have hardware that could run really great looking games in 4k@60fps. Its that the very same game could look significantly better running at 30fps.

And how a game looks is unfortunately more marketable at first than how it plays, so the devs/publishers focus on that instead.

Graphics will always have more importance over frame rate it seems, so even if we went 4K they'd probably just try to boost visual effects instead of having a crisp 60FPS.

Sorry to burt your bubble, but 8k or 7680×4320 is next. ;)

Games that can leverage the increases in resolution should do so.

Games that are more sensitive to performance should focus on that area. (Overwatch for example.)

Hopefully 4k lasts a good amount of time.

I rather see them go a differnt path then, after 4k console gameing becomes the norm.
Race to the bottom with price, give us a truely affordable console able to do that, instead of chaseing 8k.

Why 4k? wtf does having 1080p to 4k do to make the game play better / more enjoyable?

I say stop at 1080p. Make that the standard and focus on technologies to decrease the cost of building new assets. Focus on improving dev tooling and hit the best of technology with high efficiency.

Then you can ditch crazy installs, ditch bloated games, lower risk, lower costs, improve enjoyments, lower need for patches and launch defects, etc, etc.

Quit chasing the damn graphical dick measuring and focus on making interesting and new game IPs.

Well if you said this before the Pro came out I would've totally agreed with you! but 4K is already out and why would we downgrade for 1080p? It doesn't make sense in my opinion. Games were perfectly fine at 1080p but nope, we just HAD to go unto 4K

Just because pro exists, doesn't mean 4K is mandatory. Game devs can still focus on what I mentioned with PS4Pro or Scorpio power levels without 4K.
